I have looked at the other radiator at the beginning of this thread and compared it to the Coolex radiator. The top and bottom of the Coolex radiator core are protected by a thick "C" section finishing strip with the mounting pegs on them and not on a thin strip attached to the core. The water tanks are made from a single piece of folded aluminium with less welds. The Coolex radiator is £215 base price but does come with a 3 years guarantee.

How do i know this, well my Alloy Rad was leaking due to it being lose and rattling. When i removed the rad the upper rubber grommits were missing The Rad couldn`t be repaired so had to buy another which cost me £228

Is this why coolex uses a c section top and btm

Hello all

The side rails give the radiator strength and protects the 4 corners of the core. These are vulnerable on a cross flow radiator especially one as wide as the M100 (law of levers). it is also the strongest place to put the mounting pegs, by attaching them to the tubes they will stress the core.



We have been making elan 26R aluminium header tanks / swirl pots for many years and would be keen to increase our range by including the M100.



I am in the process of obtaining a M100 header tank to copy in aluminium and will let you know when they are available.

Hello All

I have been to Woodies today and fitted the prototype header tank to his very nice car. We find that we can increase the size of the tank and have a couple of things to be adjusted with the fitting that we will be working on next week. Woody has said we may go back and recheck our measurements to ensure that we get a good fit. I would think this can be done in the next 7 to 10 days and we will have a cost and delivery for this part to the members soon. This header tank sports an aluminium sight glass which will be offered as an extra if a member would like one. A big thanks from us to Woody for his help on this project.

About a year ago I was in contact with Bailey as my plastic header tank had failed. Fortunately I was able to source a replacement tank in the US.
I have attached some details from my correspondence with them:

Thanks for your reply. This is a point for discussion, as we know that the Elan did indeed come fitted with the same tank as the Nova, but we have a UK Lotus specialist that orders them from us with a larger bottom connection. The Nova tank has a 7/8" (22.23mm) spout, but we increase this to 1" (25.4mm) for the Lotus guy. He says this is due to the hoses swelling over time, so either he is 100% correct or he is forcing the original hose over the 1" connection !!

Maybe if you have a few moments, you can check the diameter of the bottom connection on your Elan and maybe even take off the hose itself and measuring the internal diameter of that. We can supply either, both the same cost. We have the standard Nova tank in stock, the 1" connection version will be 14 days.

Hello All,

I have not seen a Bailey Header tank close too, but I have studied several pictures of the unit. The one I have just finished is sloped at the bottom and not straight, so as to fit the contours of the body. the main part of the tank is constructed in 1 piece of aluminium tube with a wall thickness of 3.4 mm. A template has been made to ensure that all the mounting brackets and pipes line up with the existing fittings. I have studied the comments on the header tank main hose listed here:

I have opted for a hose size of 15/16" (24.00 mm) which splits the difference, as the original plastic bottle main pipe measure 7/8" (22.23 mm) The filler neck is a copy of the plastic bottle and takes the GM / Vauxhall yellow plastic cap rated at 1.2 Bar / 18 lbs. There is an optional 3/4" aluminium boss welded to the front with a sight glass to enable water checks whilst the cap is on and sealed.
I am going to Woody on Saturday morning to check the fit and have promised the next unit to Steve in Virginia, there will be several available for the end of next week. I will post picture of the finished unit fitted to Woodies car tomorrow with the final costs and the discounted cost to the members.
