Tow bar .....you must be joking right ?

Postby pit_stop » Sun 08.07.2007, 20:56

Out of interest, has anyone got/bought/made and fitted a tow bar ? I seem to remember seing one for sale years ago but nothing since. Not that i want a ball hitch sticking out of the back of my car all the time, but i just wondeered if anyone had anything , perhaps like one of the 'quick remove' BMW types?
Just a thought.

I would have thought an Elan would be very unsuitable for towing. It is recommended that you tow no more than half the vehicle's weight. That makes it about 500kg, which is probably not much more than a trailer.
Besides, the Elan is good mainly because it is light. I would want to strip further weight from it, not tow a load more around.

No, I would not consider it. Use the other car.

I had a heavy-duty custom hitch made for a Maxda RX2 at the U-Haul hitch-center (not a standard U-Haul place. Most large towns will have 1 U-Haul which installs tow-hitches, and failing that shops which do exhausts & welding will also do.) This was fit to the frame as there was no 'truck-hitch' location. After I had used it to tow a motorcycle back from Long Island, I was rear-ended one day. The hitch, which bolted onto the frame at left & right, took all the impact & was bowed... but my car was completely undamaged!

Except for that I agree that there must be a better tow-car available to you than an Elan.
Strive for perfection in everything. (given time)
Take the best that exists & make it better. (given inclination)
If it doesn't exist, create it. (God did)
Ignore what I say. (good advice)
