Front brake upgrade: Alcon H-Type caliper w/ 295mm disc

Hi,

I already have adopted the 16" Wilwood front brake upgrade for my M100 S2 with 16" Fed rims.

Now, I am thinking about adopting Alcon H-type calipers with 295mm disc. I did consider AP CP5200 as well. It is more expensive though.

What do you think?

My brake specialist told me Alcon H-type with 295mm disc should also fit M100 SE's 15" rims. Any comments?

My choice for the Alcon H-type calipers (radial mount; leading):

CRH304/28-38/41LL and CRH304/28-38/41RL

Corresponding disc/rotor:

DV295/25/53-12/178L and DV295/25/53-12/178R


So, my brake specialist will soon make adapter for Alcon H-type radial mount leading calipers to fit M100 Elan and disc hat (for that 295mm disc/rotor).

Do you think this Alcon H-type calipers would offer significantly better braking ability over the Wilwood one?

Who else would be interested in a set a adapter and disc hat for Alcon H-type calipers?

I`ve not heard off them

I would only change them if they have the dust seals
Can`t imagine them giving you better braking, otherwise you`ll just be locking them brakes up all the time + you may need to go to a bigger BMC.

Whats the thichness of the Disc?
What will be the overall price of a full Brake kit?
Are the parts easly available?

Don`t forget there`s already Hi-spec and the more expensive AP`s

Alcon H-type calipers do have dust seals, and its size is a bit larger than Wilwood's 4 pot caliper. It is a lot smaller than AP CP5100 and CP5200 calipers.

Part number: CRH304/28-38/41 , this H-Type caliper accepts up to 304mm disc and uses 25.4mm or 28mm thick disc.

My brake specialist recommends that I use 295mm/25.4mm thick Alcon disc.


Just like AP, Alcon is a UK brand. I am sure these Alcon calipers and discs are readily available in UK.

At a glance the Alcon caliper for a 25.4mm-thick disc looks to be more than 8mm thicker (from the disc centerline) than the Wilwood caliper for 31.8mm-thick disc (fitted to my car). I don't think you'll be able to use Alcon calipers and maintain the standard wheel offset?

I got more information.

ALCON H-type does not have dust seals.


AP CP5200 calipers do have dust seals. However, one must use 300mm or 304mm diameter disc. So, this mean that this AP CP5200 caliper conversion would only work on 16" rims.

My specialist still maintains that offset of wheels is not affected.

I believe the thickness of the hats' mounting face is thicker in the AP kit, effectively reducing the wheels offset - Dave M should be able to confirm that?
