ECU Upgrade Instructions

Postby BarryDalHerbert » Sat 10.02.2024, 06:50

ECU Upgrade Instructions specifically for my 1995 S2 RHD with air conditioning, but of value to anybody who purchased RonR's offering below.
viewtopic.php?f=131&t=29702

The PDF is picture heavy, and at 12MB it is too large for the LEC maximum upload of 2MB, so it is stored on my MEGA.nz cloud site.
Click on the link and you will be taken straight there, no logons or other farnarkeling around required. And this site values privacy, but really does, NOT like all those other turds who might utter similar words.
You may even find other Lotus treasures there. :D

Outstanding instructions and photos, Barry, good work

Some of the other stuff is fun too, especially the Gordon Murray pieces.

Barry, excellent instructions to complement those on the Mountain Chip site - but in your post you've inferred that you replaced the blue MEMCAL, whereas the MChips instructions indicate that this blue part should just be added to the new Moates board containing your dual processor then tucked further back into the ecu.

I gather this provides a 'limp home' facility (plus somewhere to store the original MEMCAL) and I'm a bit surprised if you haven't used this option(?) (What's the LEC consensus I wonder; replaced or added?)

I like the way you've routed and grommited the switcher cable out of your ecu. I sited my switch after drilling a hole in a blank switch plate. Conveniently there's 2 close to the digital clock on my SE and I thought might be easier to switch whilst on the move compared to reaching across and groping around in the glovebox...

Oh, and your MEGA stuff was so interesting I 'pinched' it. - Hope you don't mind

ps an afterthought...

Mine's an SE that's been O2-sensored to run closed-loop.

Since yours is an S2 that's already running closed loop, your 'back up' (presumably) would be the 1499 map on Ron's dual chip adapter - so you wouldn't need to plug in your spare MEMCAL?

Well spotted Chris,

I PM'ed Barry to say that the original blue "Memcal" must be attached to the board to give the Limp-Home functionality, whether it's one of Alan's or one of mine, in an SE or an S2.

Instructions? Pah! Who needs to read those? Well me it seems. I thought that I knew what I was doing, but luckily there are smarter people on LEC who actually do know what they are doing, thank you ChrisM and RonR.

I have modified my PDF so that others do not make my mistake.
And sorry to anybody who blindly followed my instructions, and now has to do it all again.

Once I have reinstalled the blue box to my car, I will again update the instructions with picture(s).

As a side note, the car behaves perfectly well without the blue box, but would of course not allow me to "limp home" if required.

Barry, please don't beat yourself up :( - you've certainly done me a favour...

I'd always wondered if Mountain/Ron's dual chip would need the MEMCAL limp-home option for both ES and S2 and what would happen if it wasn't fitted (it's a bit of a squeeze, you might need to prize the casing further apart and/or do some wriggling).

Now we know that it might actually be an option, since it runs perfectly well without :)

The latest, and hopefully final instructions are now able to be downloaded from my MEGA cloud account:
https://mega.nz/folder/TPY3gIqD#jMVQ6cLT6X2G1vPtyoZ66A

I could not get the new board with the blue box attached to go back into the ECU case, so I took the lid off of the blue box, and that makes it fit easily.

Yep, I found that wriggling the MEMCAL with the right hand whilst prising the front of the ecu slightly further apart with the left thumb and forefinger worked for me to get it over the white socket lip. Also I'm really glad that someone else has those 'hot melt glue-gun' troubles too :-) - I thought it was only me...

Great, those new instructions fill in an awful lot of spaces and should supply a great deal of 'hindsight'.

(Oh...and btw the little black collar under the yellow map choice jumper can easily be slid upwards and removed from the pins to give more clearance if the top of the jumper fouls the case of the ecu - it can be a very tight fit can't it?)

An alternative to wriggling, prizing and removing the blue cover.

Remove the three small screws, slide circuit board forward, mount switcher assembly (with decorum and ease ;)) , slide circuit board back in, replace three screws.

I didn't realise that the little black collar was able to be removed from the pins, so I filed down the height of the jumper+wires. Your way is far easier!

And I did not investigate far enough to discover the three screws solution. The lid of the blue box popped off very easily, and that was job done for me!

…and talking about the benefit of hindsight…

In Apr ’22 I was lamenting my poor fuel cons and worried about impending MoT emissions so I decided to '1499/O2sensor' my ’90 SE relying on Wiki, RonR and KenS’s copious hand-holding (…thanks fellas)

ElanScan, despite its erroneous claims, showed all was ‘closed loop’ - and well - until it expired due to the win11/FDTI drivers legacy (there’s a long thread on this…) and it effectively ‘stopped’ for me. Jan’23’s MoT emissions were pleasingly lean and green tho’...

Later superhuman effort by these fellows got it limping back in win11, but with the same annoying ‘logging’ anomalies, so having trialled Ron’s 9930/1499 dual initiative followed swiftly by his 1499/Everest I was really keen to try KenS’s BTScan ‘magic’ ALDL adapter. It provides all the usual EScan ‘treats' but in a brand new bluetooth format.

(Ken also spotted the ALDLScan bluetooth link with his new adapter and he provides a bespoke LEC-specific m100 pathway that adds the ability to use our (andoid) mobiles to inspect static ecu data as well - which sealed its usefulness in my book.)

Unfortunately for me, BTScan was so useful that it exposed the fact that (despite suspecting higher fuel cons and noticing really poor Jan’24 MoT emissions) a data log showed that I must have been running open loop for most of 2023. :(

(The A4 connector on the RHFHC connector behind the splash-guard in my driver’s wheel well had de-pinned meaning that my O2 sensor wasn’t getting the necessary heater supply during this time - happily now fixed with long-nosed pliers)

Sooo…RonR’s 1499 upgrade + ‘Son of Mountain Chip’ and KenS’s ‘Daughter of ElanScan’ + ALDLScan have certainly enhanced my m100 life - and imo both deserve a place together on this ‘Update’ thread. My copy of Ken's bluetooth adapter is picced above
