A couple of years ago I purchases a full set original Elan Tyres, their one and only purpose ...Show tyres...not driving.

But I made a boob

They're SE tyres, would anyone know the differences or have any photos of an N/A with OEM tyres?

Nargh... it's gotta be to handle the additional Torque and power generated via the uprated gearbox ratio whilst progressing through the lower speeds

I guess its just a difference compound, well worth it for 150 odd cars

.....but the original N/A spec was indeed different than for the SE

N/A tyres were V rated, rather than Z rated for the SE

And the Michelin compound was also different MXV for the N/A and MXX for the SE

SE had Michelin MXX-2 205/50 ZR15 tyres while NA had MXV2 205/50 VR15 tyres. MXX-2 had kevlar belts which made it 4lb lighter than equivalent steel belted tyre but they were discontinued several decades ago. My first SE came on worn MXX-2's in '95 but couldn't find them anywhere a year later and Hethel recommended MXX3 Pilot SX ZR15 as the nearest substitute for the discontinued MXX-2. Had difficulty finding MXX3's and the list price was 'eye wateringt' so fitted 4 Avon ZZ1's for less than the price of 2 MXX3's. They worked very well.

The NA's MXV2 type continued for a lot longer and some of different profiles can still be found on ebay. Some photos here If you want to see what they looked like -

There's a possibility I might track down the real McCoy then, failing that... It'll be SE tyres for show.

To be honest Dave, I think even the best of Lotus scrutineers from Hethel probably wouldn't know the difference. So I think the SE Michelin MXX2's would be appropriate and very period

PS Have you checked on Clemo. He's probably got a few of the original MXV2's in his garage or garden. Probably with a few geraniums in them and trailing lobelia hanging over the sides though

I'm off out to get one now; I particularly like the fact that it has "included three sets of joints cheer: ball pin / balloon / floating bed". At my age, my joints need all the cheer they can get

Perhaps Specky is preparing for Pebble Beach. The scrutineers there are notoriously picky on details like this.
