SE wheel centre caps

Postby chrism » Sat 14.01.2023, 16:58

For ages I've been wondering what to do about those bland silver 15" OZ wheel centre caps, looking longingly at those >£70ish four little bits of plastic offerings from the dealers. So I looked on eBay.

Image

My first buy was the metallic, domed 55mm dia sticky caps at the top of the pic. Too large, oh why didn't I measure them first(?), probably for S2 BBS wheels. (Any S2-er want them?)

Second buy was 45mm dia flat stickers. Nice, but I realised I wanted a silvery surround like on the bonnet. Getting better; 45mm exactly fits inside the cap...

Third buy was from Ian, whose original ad was for larger flat stickers, (87mm, I think) but he agreed to do a 'one-off' bespoke set of 45mm dia at the same price which went on (quite nicely I think) as shown in the lower pic. (I've got a spare set too...)

Image

I realise that they're not 'real' but they costed £5-95 (per set of four) - and I stuck them over my original caps... So if anyone's been licking their lips about those 'proper' expensive original wheel centre cap replacements then here's an alternative that's much lighter on the pocket, gives a similar bit of 'Lotus-coloury-bling' to the wheel area - and is nearly as good. The yellow in the pic is actually a little darker in reality.

(And I've found that 45mm dia is definitely the 15" OZ centre cap size for these stickers; I've seen 46's/47's in other posts after realising that the 55's are definitely too big.)

Anyway, I thought I'd share this 'solution' - even tho' I still really hanker for those expensive Lotus-logo'd replacements... :( Anyone know of any decent used ones about?

In addition to this HJ2 has kindly measured his S2 16" BBS wheel centres at 53mm inside the black surround. (Possibly 55mm including that black perimeter.)

Hope this helps any m100 wheel centre 'fettlers' too...

im not particularly found of the silver surround effect on the wheels. That probably mostly dues to the fact mine have been re-sprayed in gunmetal grey, it may suit silver wheels. :smt102

Yes I suppose it merges easily into the silver wheel colour but might stand out a little too much against a darker colour like gunmetal.

Hur...(slightly abashed, embarrassed and eyes lowered :-) )...after all that I then managed to find a used set of the 'real thing' from one of our friendly Lotus recyclers - (imo) much better v-f-m than the stratospheric dealer prices of the new items.

So...if anyone wants to relieve me of a couple of sets of 45mm SE stickers that 'work' with our centre-caps, I'm your man; just (pm or) email me :)

(The 53mm S2 stickies have now been re-homed tho'... EDIT: as have the 'silver'-bordered 45mm ones, now)

I made a roll of SE stickers out of car wrap vinyl. I still have several left and have been supplying them to members of the facebook groups, if anyone here is interested.

I used the logo file from the 90s, they're pretty high quality, you just need to apply them to your caps. I think I've supplied 5 sets so far at $20USD mailed. If you'd like one, PM me, I can put them in an envelope!

Yep, they look really authentic - and a really good alternative to the 'expensives'.
What size are yours tho'? In UK 15" SE OZ need to be 45mm dia and 16" S2 BBS need to be 53mm.

They fit the SE caps (at least on my federal), they're roughly 46mm in diameter. Haven't heard any word of them not fitting from the 5 members I've supplied to yet, but I'd hope they would let me know!

the Fed SE alloys are 16inch instead of 15
i dont know if the caps are different or not. but just want to point out the wheels have the same design, but are different size.

Correct, but they're also a slightly different design. Fed wheels have straight "spokes." But so far, I haven't had any complaints about the sets I've mailed

Just to try and put an end to any speculation, the centre caps for SE/NA/FED wheels made by OZ are all the same (whether they are 15" or 16")..... it is only the S2 which had different ones.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
