It is only on this forum that i have ever come accross the 'Best tyres on the rear' comment.
Now, that's NOT to say that it isn't published elsewhere, or that it is wrong, or that i disagree, there appear to be sound reasons for it.
What i would say is that (like Rambo), I'm old enough to remember that the driven wheels always get the NEW tyres ('cos they wear fastest), and the wheels on the steering axle get the 'BEST' tyres (for grip).
BUT.....
This is wisdom from the age of the Morris Marina, Vauxhall Viva, et al (and probably well before then) which all had RWD and low power outputs.
4WD was restricted to LandRovers and nowt on the road had it, Tyre technology has also moved on in leaps and bounds........
Enough of the past, I follow this with interest, but in the meantime, i don't go fast enough on the limit to worry about it, and the tyres are all 'Good' ones which stick to the floor.
One question though, when does a 'Good' tyre lose its 'Goodness' ????
It is widely accepted that a tyre is past its best at 10 years of age - so although Michelin were original fitment, even if they have plenty of tread, are they as good as a newer tyre of lower initial quality?
I ask because I've recently put a pair of Yoko 008's on the front, whilst retaining Michelin on the rear (of unknown age, and i cant be bothered to go and get the date code off them at the moment!).
Now, I've always liked 008's (The tyre of choice for motorsport back in my day!), but accept that although i purchased them as 'unused' they cant really be called 'new'. i trust the seller, and know that they have been stored correctly, so am happy to put 8 year old tyres on my car - if i can find another pair, I'll snap 'em up, but in the meantime, the Michelin on the rear *MAY* be better than the Yoko's, or may not
So what do i buy when the Michelin need replacement???
And which end do i fit 'em ('Cos if you think I'm prepared to have 008's on the back with Budget on the front, you're having a laff!)
(realistically, i think the choices are currently down to Yoko, Toyo and NCT5 - with perhaps Avons/Kumho as a thought).
