Toyo Proxies Type 1RS & 1RT

Thought a topic should be started here.<br><br>My wobbling dilemmas seem to point towards my new tyres fitted on the rear.<br><br>Toyo Proxis Type 1RT  The stiffened wall variety.<br><br>They are a new type and since many elaners, and other car owners, have rated the 1RS I thought they would be a safe bet.<br><br>My experiences have not been good so I'm wondering if other people can share their opinions of these 2 types of tyre to conclude if the 1RT's are worth fitting.

Stef,  my Proxies are from My tyres to which are the T1-S (only on the front). Not had much chance with testing them yet as Pinky has been more of the road than on :-/<br><br>I`m not up on tyres but i`ve not heard of the ones u mention + i`d be suprised if it`s the new tyres that give u the wobble unless there`s a defect in the tyres. Might be worth putting them on a balancing machine and give them a spin to see if there missed shaped  ???

As discussed on the Castle Coombe thread, I have these fitted (all 4) and I am having wobble sensations, although they are starting to improve after about 600 miles driving. <br><br>Worst is at high speed when the car goes very light - it certainly makes the ar*e twitch until you get used to it!

Tell me about it ;D<br><br>Blipi had her tracking checked and balancing and all the usuals.  As I say, the only area fingers could point were the new tyres.<br><br>They were orinally put the pressure at 30psi which I think may have been too high, especially as they are a stiff tyre.<br><br>What pressure are yours at Humph?

Just felt like the back of the car was waving around behind me everytime I chnaged direction <br> <br>First thing I found was the pressures were up at 34psi!!! So i dropped them down to 26psi. Made for a totally different drive straight away. Felt just like it had on the previous tyres <br>Have done about 600 miles now, and they feel pretty good. I take it you mean the Type R's, stiffened walled ones?<br><br>I am swopping them to the front tomorrow.  Things do seem to feel a  ittle better now but still have a few nerves to work through especially encountering wheel ruts on motorways again!  And not done long distance yet.  Oh well, my trip to Castle Combe this w/e will be a good test! ::)<br><br>Ta for your feedback.  General result I feel is don't get these tyres! ;D

Yep, I have the Type R, same tread as above. I was told by etyres.co.uk that the R was a replacement for the S!??!<br>See here<br><br>Although the above link shows the S they actually supply the R and at £59 not £89!!<br><br>or the Rs are also supplied by these guys

Stef<br><br>I'm certainly no expert, but would expect the pressure to be much more critical in a tyre with an assymetric tread pattern; suppose they are both mounted the same (correct) way round?<br>Seems very odd that two new tyres could cause so much grief, even allowing for our lack of weight; if anyone at the track has a portable compressor, you could play with different pressures until you find the optimum. If you need to switch them around, a carefully arranged 'pit-stop competition' should do it  ;D <br><br><br>

Might reduce pressure from there.<br><br>Might be interesting to see if we can swop my wheels to another car to see what they think.<br><br>Now they have more wear they should probably be friendlier.<br><br>Would we have some road/track to use for little tests?

There's not much else there apart from the public roads around the circuit IIRC.

Well after putting the new tyres to the front I can say I have had no problems.<br><br>I also spoke to an Elise owner who had the Type R's on all 4 and he's had no worries at all, thinks they are good!<br><br>Conclusion according to Stef:<br>The tyres design must be fine but seems to need weight or power to them.  On the back of the Elan with no weight or power I can ony guess it does not hold the road properly.  Personally I wouldn't advise them for the Elan over the Type S.  The type S also look better IMO! ;D<br><br>On the track my tyres did feather up a little but I had the pressure at a low(ish) 28, with more pressure I guess I saved the tyre wear a bit more but it made the drive home a little more skittish but not uncomfortably.  I will reduce them to 29 perhaps 28 again I think.<br><br>Hope this info can be useful to fellow Elaners!

I have the Proxes T1-S which is probably not the same as either the 1RS or 1RT but have found them quite progressive in their handling although ultimately not as grippy as I would like - they seem to have identical tread to the photo so am not sure what the difference is - maybe the sidewall.  I did notice that when the pressure is low there is considerably less grip so would not suggest as low a pressure as 22 - probably nothing below even 26.

I have just put Federal wheels with Proxie T1Rs on my SE and haven't had any wobble problems yet. I have only done about 100 miles on damp roads so far and I haven't had chance to yet. I will report again later

Hi,

I've been reading the posts on the Toyo T1R tyres with some interest and concern after just having got a set delivered on some new S2 rims to replace my old SE wheels.

I am finding the handling characteristics of these tyres rather negative at the moment. The back end feels quite lively now which it didn't do before. Which doesn't inspire the greatest confidence on fast corners at the moment.

I've also got a track day booked at Brands Hatch on the 24th May which I was looking forward to until recently, now I'm not so sure, given the current handling situation.

So I guess what I am really hoping to find out is, do these tyres just take a long time to bed in, or are they just plain not a good match for the car. Hopefully now that some people have been running them for longer, they could pass on their thoughts, which would be really appreciated especially if they found tyre pressures that worked well.
