Making progress : replica 16" wheel/rim with offset +60

Personal opinion but not convinced the minilite style wheels suit our Elan. When researching fitting BMW Mini wheels to fit our Elan I was given one of the BMW Mini Minilite style wheels It answered all my questions on bolt pattern and spacing and centre bore but the wheel design would not clear my Hi-Spec Billet 4 calipers, I'm sure it would clear the standard brakes though.

but that only indicates that the bmw wheel doesnt fit. it doesnt indicate wether or not the minilites will work or not. i actually like the splach of classic in there. i find they work. do you know if the s2 wheels will clear?

It seems to me that many other LEC members would prefer 17" S2-style rims.

We all know that for 16" rims, our Elan M100 use 205/45/16 tires.

For 17" rims with proper +60 offset, what kind of tires should be used? I will want to give this piece of information to this guy who has helped me.

Tirerack.com says 215/40/17 is the 17" replacement. That would be about 1/2 inch bigger diameter overall, and slow the speedo down about 2% (which would make it a little more accurate).

Personally, I find the ride on 17"s on an Elan very compromised

16" is the way to go

Whilst i appreciate that Chris is quoting from another source, not specific to the elan, don't forget that if you go up to a 215 width tyre, there MAY be clearance problems on full lock.

I know different people have tried it - some with sucess, others with problems - just to be aware.

I had 17" on my previous Lotus Elan (see my avatar).
The wheels did fill the wheelgaps better than 16", but the ET was totaly wrong (~ET+43) and messed up my suspension and driving characteristics.

So I am searching for other 17" wheels with a correct ET so I have a nice result and look but keep the good handling of the car.

That's what I meant. Correctly dimensioned nut spacing & offset. 17" wheels is something I never considered until you mentioned it.
I doubt you can currently get 'em, so will have to get some made.
I believ Michael was gauging interest for S2 replicas with this thread. If there are lots wanting 17" wheels to an S2 pattern, then we may see some manufactured.

I'll be interested to see how this thread develops.

I still use 205/40 17". 215 scrubs too much speed for my taste and gets too close to rubbing.

Nope. Aspect ratio is too high because the rim diameter has been changed. May rub under "spirited" driving.
