Being a wonderfully sunny day on Sunday i thought it was essential to get the car out and add a few more grams of emissions to the atmosphere. All was going swimmingly at no more than 40mph until i heard and felt a huge bang as i went into, and out of a Pot hole in the road. I slowed down and drove very carefully for about a mile or so to feel the steering and any odd response from the front end. With it feeling ok i carried on to our first stop off point about 4 miles further on. As i got out of the car i notice the front nearside tyre was about half inflated. When i got down for a closer look i could hear it hissing and within the next 3 or 4 mins the tyre was totally flat.
On another look i saw that the rim had a big dent in it, which was obviously the result of the pot hole. I figured it had 'snake bitten' the tyre which was brand new along with the the other three about 200 miles ago earlier this year. Oddly though and hopefully i cant see any wall damage to the tyre and i think that the dent has caused the tyre seal to fail. It probably doesnt look that bad a dent, but it isnt just the immediate rim thats out of shape, it feels as if its also the face that becomes the spoke end that feels pushed in too.
My next course of action is to hope that the wheel is repairable otherwise im in a drastic situation.
I had to limp home using the ridiculous looking 27 year old space saver. Its clearly never been used and It only had 11psi in it. I had to carry it to a nearby garage and gingerly up it to 45psi. I didnt dare try the 60psi it should have.
Claim is now about to be started with the council, but i have no idea yet what the repair costs will be, how to submit a cost if the wheel is condemned, or even if the council will accept responsibility.

i remember years ago coming across something about this type of topic. and there is a process to make the counsil responsinble. there are multiple factors to take into account. and some of them are related to the size of the pot hole.
i vaguely remember that the size stipulations were ridiculous. (as the pot hole had to be huge) so that doesnt look good on your side.

as far as repairing alloys. that is possible. the technique requires a specialised machine that stretches them and oxy-acetiline heat. although from my previous enquires on the topic. it appears most people are against the procedure because the heat treatment has some detrimental effect on "some/most" alloys

most "wheel refurbishing" businesses will not have the tooling for this but pretend they have access to it somehow. (im not sure why they do that, but thats the impression i got when i talked to 5 different ones in the Walsall area)

I would suggest the quickest way to lear about the counsil is to search on youtube and find if there are any videos of people explainign the process (reading burocratic paperwork is more likely to discorage you than someone's real world experience)

i hope you get the counsil to cover for the damage. those S2 wheels are extremely pricey and i also hope you find someone willing to un-buckle it. as throwing another one in the garbage only increases the prices overtime.

Ouch! I've seen some excellent refurbs including necessary straightening, but never on a rim that bashed. My local place failed to unbuckle a Range Rover wheel for me that was nowhere near that bad. Best of luck with finding somewhere that can do it, but my guess is you'll be needing a new wheel. And frustratingly you may be competing with Blimeyme who has been on here asking about a vibration issue after hitting a pothole....

One of my S2 alloys had a dent when I got the car - but not quite as bad as yours - but they repaired it, that was about 6 months ago. And has been ok since. This was done at South West wheel repairs Exeter.

you may be competing with Blimeyme who has been on here asking about a vibration issue after hitting a pothole....

last time i checked that thread he was still investigating possible root causes.

without any trigger like hitting a pothole its rather rare that a wheel would be buckled.

bloody potholes everywhere....

makes me think i maybe should be replacing the original alloys with some cheap aftermarket stuff just for the sake of keeping the original stuff safe

Update to this still ongoing saga.
The good news is that the wheel repair place recommend to me did a top job of repairing the wheel and then refurbishing to rectify the marking left by the the process. It needed a refurb anyway as the P. O's wife (probably) had picked up a case of kerb rash on this wheel.
The tyre was ruined of course having had its wall nipped between the exit edge of the pothole and the wheel edge. Shame to see a virtually brand new tyre turned to trash.
Anyway the huge relief is that despite costing me a small and unecessary fortune the wheel lives on and i dont have to face the impossible challenge of replacing it.
Claim with photos and other evidence has been submitted to the responsible council and i might get a conclusion out of them within the next 6 months. Im not holding my breath though.
