New Tires on a daily driver

Postby jello » Thu 28.09.2006, 06:03

I just put new tires on my daily driver elan. I have had previous experience with Dunlop Sp Sport 5000's on my porsche 911, so I thought I'd try them out on my lotus. Porsche experience, as well as reading reviews, says they handle very well, are quiet, wear fairly well, and are very inexpensive for what you get. I've only driven them 1 day so far, but they are living up to the expectation. The tires are high performance all season tires - 215/45/17s on my car (I have 17" team loco wheels). I had ultra high performance Bridgstones on before, and while they were good, they couldn't go over 20 in the snow, and rain wasn't real good either.

Just my 2 cents on tire selection.

More on Dunlop SP Sport 5000

Postby jello » Mon 12.03.2007, 17:48

Ok, I posted on this earlier, and I love the tires, HOWEVER, there is an issue. Thought I'd bring it up because of the scrub radius discussion and the offset. My 215/45-17 Dunlop SP Sport 5000's are quite, have good traction, are not bad in the snow, but in a turn, they can and have scrubbed the wheelarch liner. This has worn a sharp pointin one area, which in turn has cut the sidewall of the tire about 1mm deep, and 7mm long right where it says Dunlop on the side of the tire. I put a lot of miles on my car, so I'm going to keep these on until they wear out. Once they are worn out, however, I'm going to look for a nice Dunlop in a 205/50 - 17 or so.

The wheels are a 17"x7" wheel with a 48 offset. Wish I could get a set of OEM 16" wheels - fed spec or S2 at a reasonable cost (I haven't found them for less than $1000 a set - which isn't bad, but I'm trying to go less expensive than that).
