New clutch finally in, but can I know for sure if it's right

Postby Hegg » Sat 17.03.2007, 06:53

So I've finally received my guaranteed-to-work clutch from Clutch Specialties. It looks good so far. I've put it in the car and got the transmission back on (just 3 bolts so far) and I've hooked up the clutch cable. Pressing the clutch *feels* right now. It has that slight 'get easier' point where it feels like the clutch has disengaged correctly.

But - before I assemble the whole car (AGAIN!!), is there a sure-fire way I can be certain it is functioning correctly? Rotating the engine in gear with someone pressing the pedal in and I can see the gears still moving in the driveshaft holes, but my (limited) understanding is that this is normal. Something to do with the limited slip thingamajig...

Any suggestions?

Yay, I think it's going to work!!!! I hooked up the clutch cable and the driveshafts to the tranny and wheel hubs, then had someone sit in the car and press the brake and clutch at the same time and see if I could still turn the engine.

I can!!! Now I just have to put the whole thing back together!

Woo hoo!!! The Elan may yet live again!

Hegg,

remember there will be drag on the clutch even when the pedal is depressed, so you did well to hit the brakes too! Otherwise if you just press the clutch in and raise the front wheels, they will turn with the enigne on from the drag.

if you installed it all corectly then it will work!

Got the whole thing put back together at about 1:30 am last night.... haven't even had the energy to go out and see if it'll start yet.

Everything looks good so far and the pedal feels right though. I'm optimistic that it'll work! Probably won't have time today, but tomorrow for sure I'll find out.

Front-wheel-drive clutch changes are a pain.

Yay! My clutch works!!! Been driving it for a few days, and that sure does feel good again.

Just in time for the good weather, too!

It was from the place I got my AASCO flywheel - Clutch Specialties in California.

Hope that helps.

yeah but what kind exactly? I heard people fitted 6-puck clutch kits and I bought the same. Are there any problems with the 6-puck disc like vibration on starting?
