Intermittent gear selection problem

Hi

The only time the problem occurs (and even then it is only on some occasions) is when I come to a halt and put the car in neutral and then try moving off after a minute or two. I cannot select any gears unless I switch the engine off, depress the clutch, select first gear and then restart the engine. Then everything works OK until the next time it happens! The clutch is correctly adjusted. Any ideas on what the problem could be?
