Clutch clonk & gear selection difficulty

Sorry to start a new thread, but it appears that nobody has previously experienced the same symptoms as these.
My gears suddenly became difficult to select yesterday. When sitting still with the engine running, I can select everything except 5th then, when engaging the clutch, it engages with a sudden jerk & then all gears except 5th become difficult to select. Then when I stop again, I have to try to engage a few different gears before it will go into 1st.
Both the clutch & gear selection were fine, then they both went together, so I believe they may be related.
I was surprised that nobody on here appears to have suffered this so I called Gerald at GST. He suggested that 5th may have slipped along thr shaft so has mis-aligned the others & that this may be adjustable with the gearbox in situ by just removing the end cover.
I'll post the solution once it has been found, unless somebody recognises the symptoms?

If I can't sort this myself, it will be a Gerald job.
AB cables will also be installed soon.
