Using the selecta box fitted I can select all gears in and out by hand but not 5th it will select but not release.
So I removed the selecta box and used a screw driver in the top again I can select all gears but to de-select 5th takes a lot of effort.
So I removed the end of the gearbox and neither of the nuts have come undone, using the yoke over 5th gear again I can select the gear but again I have to use a lot of force with a screw driver to release.
Any ideas before I remove the gearbox
Thanks
Simon

Check for a lose rear nut,
carefull check the two rear cogs, one floats a bit over the other.
Is the selector moving over them seamlessly ?

the rear nut has not moved and is still has the tab lock in place
you can select 5th by pushing the selector but you cant unselect 5th by polling the selector, you to return the the top of the box with a screw driver.
I dont understand what could make it engage but then not dis-engage

Ah you've got the selector still fitted,
remove the selector, take out the reverse interlock or confirm orientation.
Don't trust the locking it doesn't really work.
Do the old trick of putting the car in reverse and fifth and torque check the nut.
It'll reseat fifth.

I have the Cables disconnected,
When you talk about the selector do you mean the "box" on top of the gearbox the cables connect to??
If you do the selector is removed

OK,
I have now removed the Yoke and 5th gear and I still have the same issue I can select the non existence 5th gear (using a screwdriver in the top of the gear box) but it will not unselect without a huge amount of effort any idea ???

story so far removed gearbox still stuck in 5th, cleaned geardox out ready to inspect now it all works, but on inspecting the selecta box I have noted one of the springs is broken so I wonder if a bit of the spring fell in the box.
So I have contacted Lotus and the springs in the select are now obsolete so does anybody have an idea when I can get the springs from or has a couple I could buy or borrow to try and get some replacements?
