A strange thing seems to be happening to my SE - when the turbo kicks in, it gets to about 0.5 then the revs start climing fast and the car stops accelerating - just as if I pushed the clutch in - anyone got any ideas what this is? The clutch seems OK at low revs and speed - I think it only happens when the turbo is engaged.

It sounds to me like your clutch is indeed on the way out.
The increased power from the engine when the turbo kicks in may be overcoming the friction of the clutch, which means it will progressively get more noticeable and worse.
Unless you're "bracing" against the pedal when it goes into full combat reheat!

Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...!

Neil

at 30 mph put it in 4th and put your foot to the floor, if it slips then you need a clutch.

Bugger - it does exactly that.
Only 100,000 miles - wonder if it is still under guarentee???
BTW can you still get clutches for the Elan easily?

Thanks - that helps. I was given a guesstimate of around £250 this afternoon - is that for the whole thing then?

It sound like a parts and labour quote to me.

No, he is suggesting £250 for the new gearbox - labour extra. Apparantly it isn't worthwhile replacing just the broken part - might as well change the whole unit and have less labour cost (although it will cost a bit more) and have less hassles in the future.

I don't think you mean gearbox.
Sounds like he's going to change the whole clutch caboodle - probably wise - if you can afford it.
