major gearbox problem

Postby matt_elan » Sat 06.05.2006, 17:20

ok, one last cry 4 help here. my loved elan has been off the road since before xmas now, ive had a lot of gearbox problems.. started out as my guides were broke off my original one, so i got a second hand one, fitted it only 2 find the final drive bearings were shot. i was getting lots of rumbling etc when comin off the throttle and losin oil. so the box came out, new diff bearings, seals etc, shimmed it up 2 correct tightness. got it back on the road 2 day, and guess wot? noise still there, not as bad but there, still losin oil thru Dshaft seal and wen enterin 3rd or 4th gear, the gearstick feels like im stiring araldite!!! so so stiff? so i give up. the longer its off the road the worse cond the car gets, everythin is seizing up! i now have no brakes, i think wastgate is now stuck aswel!!! 6 months ago it was mint and now???!! so i have 2 options, sell it 4 peanuts, (i paid 8k 1 yr ago)! or find a box thats good, fit it, and fix her back up. so please please, does anyone have a gearbox?

People out there (including me) have gearboxes spare. I'd be loathed to sell it as it is my spare for my spare engine. Besides, buying another box would be a short term solution for a 'box of unknown condition.

I suggest you get yours out and get the whole thing reconned properly. All the bearings, springs etc. It'll cost you about £300 for the work, but then you'll have a mint gearbox to go with the car.

Have you spoken to A1 Gearboxes? - they quoted me circa £350 but I have yet to take the plunge.

Matt,

I had a whining on Pinky II and been driving it for a year as i thought it was a gearbox as i checked wheel bearings so i`ve done a gearbox swap and guess what it was still whining and it`s turned out it was the front wheel bearings even thought there was no play or even getting hot. Check yours, best way is to remove the hub and spin it in your hand.

ps. try quaife for a rebuild

Wheelbearings are a bugger like this. Mine showed no play, but were knackered. I had changed loads of other stuff (including a driveshaft) trying to locate the problem!

I have a spare gear box sat in the shed. Its off my 1993 SE Turbo and developed a funny clicking noise only in second gear.

My elan gets spoilt so I had a brand new box fitted at a cost of over £2,000.... :?

anyways, as its sitting in the shed it is for sale if you are interested. let me know.

Cheers

It might be worth filling in your profile a bit more so we know where you are. I've had Chris Foulds (Foulds Motors) repair one box and fit a quaife LSD in another, both were faultless jobs (although the former did have to go back for one drivershaft seal). Chris uses a specialist in Leeds for the actual gearbox work.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to sit on your arse with a blank look on your face.
