Worn out Shifter assembly

Postby Joe » Mon 09.02.2009, 19:34

My shifter assembly is knackered. The nylon cup and ball are both seriously worn out, its hanging together but completely loose and rubish. Any one know if its a standard Izuzu part or is it a special that I need to pay Lotus way too much money for?
Currently Elan-less and on the lookout for a good one.

Don't worry if the nylon bushing looks worn, it's meant to...

Give us a shout if you want my old one... gratis....it's acceptable for use

or if you want order and pay for one from Dick Lovett and I can pick it up ...I pass Oxford daily

Hey Gareth,

it's good to see your plastic coating is split too..

I bought two at Hethel last year, both coatings splits...

and the two old ones, both split... :(

Theres varying degrees of looking warn, mine is most certainly towards the "completely shagged" end of the worn scale (the ball joint comes apart if you pull upwards on the leaver!!) plus £17 for a shiny new one is a bargain too good to miss really.

Kind offer to collect for me but I'm only 15mins from Swindon so its no biggy for me to drop in when I do my weekly Asda run.

Thanks

The easiest option could be to get new inserts manufactured,

In all honesty there's not that much difference between an old one and a new one, a quick an easy way to eliminate the play in the gearstick is to transpose the inserts and regrease them.

WARNING:- This won't help with a "wobbly celery stick" in any shape or form, but new cables and a short shift will help no end.

When you have the car in a gear, how much vertical play have you got on the stick when pushed down to up?

Short shift is fitted and working great, there's a little bit of up and down play but alot of left - right play, I popped up the gaiter to check the cables were firmly attached, and you can see that all the play is in the mechanism before it transfers any to movement to the cables. Its the second Elan i've owned and its clearly worse.

I think You've just given me the answer.

It's not the main ball and socket at the base which has the play, it's the spigot at the side (the insert in the housing). I wonder if the tiny sliding ball and socket have parted company...

The good news... You can easily see both nylon ball and sockets (with both gaitors lifted)

I've compared "old to new" just to see what the difference is on play, it's next to Naff all.

Can I check my assumptions:-

OEM gearstick (uncracked mount)
Short shift (DH/BB or AB)
Cables (AB or BB)

Theres a bit of movement from the main ball and socket, but its the arm on the drivers side of the mech thats giving most of the play, namely the plasic insert thats in that arm, I didn't get a chance to get a close look, are they know to pop apart and just pop back together? on the parts manual its not listed as a separate piece so I assume I needed a shifter.

I've got a MK1 dave's, uncracked mount, and from what I can tell stock SE cables (tick....tick....tick....)

The smaller ball and mount are not known to pop, mainly because it floats. That said, if it has popped, you'll have excessive amount of play, about an extra inch either way on the crossgate, mainly because the socket would have fallen lose. When you try and change gear you'll also hear a metal on metal ting. The gear changes would also be a bugger.

I'll take some photos....

I'd be cautious on Standard SE Cables and a shortshift, I personally think it's more of a question of when they are going to break and not if they're going to break. Couple all that with the normal "Cellery stick" effect which our 20 year old cables are prone and you could be heading for a whole world of pain. Standard cables unfortunately give a large amount of play.

Photo's on the way...
