Gearbox refurb - Who can do it??

Postby Mark C » Tue 16.01.2007, 20:32

Hi guys, need to get my gearbox refurbed. After changing all the wheelbearings, two new drive shafts and refurbed central shaft bearing chasing"the noise" it'll be like a new car after all this. I've tried two local specialist and both of them won't touch it. Can anboby recommend a specialist or has anybody had it done?? Cheers!

It might be worth having a trawl through Dico's project thread here.

He's local to you and as part of his project he had a limited slip diff fitted.

Thanks, i'll give GST a bell tomorrow and post reply. I'll also ask about discounts for more than one box done as well, it's worth a go.

hijack away, A! gearboxes quoted between £475 -£575 for full bearing renewal. Suppose it's not too bad but am well skint at the moment. Repair is gonna have to be shelved for a month or two. Any spare boxes floating around on here from crashed/scrapped cars??

Hmm, funny you should ask that - I just got one yesterday!
However it has a slight leak due to some iffy welding next to the input shaft.
I've only seen a pic of it yet as I've still got to go and pick it up from Ipswich on Sunday.
But from what I've seen I reckon that a better repair could be done if it was taken to the right place. And I already know the right place.
We may be able to come to some sort of arrangement involving a swap, because I know a local gearbox specialist and wouldn't mind buying the bearings and refurbing a box on my own.

Just picked the car up from the garage after having rear wheelbearings done looking to store it for a couple of weeks to find it sounds a hell of a lot better. Gonna take it for a good spin next week to see if there is still a noise. I think the mechanic just assumed it was the box. If there is a problem i'll certainly look into the option of the exchange box . Thanks for all your advice, Fingers crossed for next drive.
