I've got to get from 8 cars down to 4 - The Fleet reduction continues!... If rather slowly.

Passed it's MOT on Thursday. It's been off the road for a few years so I have a few small jobs to do and a good polish before taking pics and writing a full description

This is a nicely sorted car in good condition and a fantastic colour - Watch this space!

EDIT: Words added here, pictures and words further down.

Ok ok! Just a couple of bits to do and I'm waiting for parts from B&C. First time I have ordered from them on their website and it hasn't worked 3 weeks so far!

It's more or less ready and I'm way too busy so I need to stop tinkering and sell it as is!

I’ll write something up this afternoon should be ready for the weekend.

And thanks to everyone who has sent me a PM - sorry I just haven't had time to respond.

Yes, it looks very similar to Imperial Green that was the colour of all of the Lotus Carltons.

It is the same, known in these parts as ErmPinkyBlue as dapinky has his this colour. It can look blue in bright light and black in indirect light - it is a fantastic colour and really suits the Elan.

The colour looks whatever it wants to! (Angie took some snaps of a run out we did a couple of weeks ago, and it looks extremely dark purple in those).

Generally, it looks black from a distance, green as you get closer (or under certain direct light).

To clear up the confusion on the name, when Lotus developed the Carlton, the powers-that-be decided that they would all be the same colour, never before used (except for 1 mythical red one which I have never seen). Opel called the car "Imperial Green" and that has always been known as the "Lotus Carlton colour".....

...... when Lotus decided to do a few of their own cars in that colour, they were no longer "owned" by General Motors, so Opel decided that they owned the name "Imperial Green" and Lotus couldn't use it..... so they gave it the name of "Empire Green" in the sales literature.

However, should you wish to buy the paint, then it is an 'official' Opel colour, never a Lotus one (in the paint catalogues I've researched), and has the paint code GM355 (Imperial Green Mica).

Didn't know about a red one - indeed hard to believe that there ever was one unless resprayed much later as it would have been well known in LC circles - my knowledge stems from 1998>2008 when I owned 808G. But I have seen the one Silver one which was accompanied by the story of "the wife of the CEO of Lucas didn't like green and it was resprayed Silver by the supplying dealer before delivery". I know it was later acquired by someone for restoration and they debated online whether it should be kept silver or returned to 355 - but dont know which way that went in the end. There have also been claims of the resurrection of the 3 pre-production cars (which were also silver) - but only via internet hearsay and the evidence is that they were scrapped by Lotus at the end of development. Of course there are also other cars out there - I've seen one Senator, and one Carlton Estate - which have been given the LC treatment and aren't 355, but obviously not factory original.

Looks lovely Simon. And in a very rare colour too. I've seen Dave's up close and it's amazing how the colour changes in seconds dependent on blue skies or clouds

This could be a very well sorted car for someone wanting to get into M100 ownership. Particularly as all the hard work (cambelt, front suspension etc...) has been done on the car by Simon and we know his attention to detail. Also there are some nice things to have ie S/S exhaust, new A pillar seals, refurb'd S2 wheels, new plugs, leads and service.

If I didn't already have 2 then......

Mike,

In the mists of time I can't remember where I heard about the red one... again, maybe a re-paint (or maybe I'm just imagining it!). The Silver respray is reasonably well documented, and I didn't know about the pre-production ones being silver.....

.... I have only ever seen Green ones! (Never seen a Senator like that - but a fair few Carlton GSi cars were done to look like the LC).

When you say “respray” in your Piston Heads ad’. Do you mean colour-change? Or a refresh of the OEM colour?

At risk of turning this into a history/Linguistic issue, it far predates the original documentary released in 1977 (based on historic events from 'a long time ago....'). Whereby Imperialism is the act of creating an Empire.....

..... but, what have the Romans ever done for us?????

Hi Aiden
Reysprayed from Medina Green to Empire Green so colour change but no change to the V5 as it says just Green. The previous owner wanted his ideal car so he found "a good S2 with A/C"and had a full panels off respray even the interior of the boot has been resprayed Empire Green. The only part where you can see traces of the original colour is the front bulkhead and then only if you are looking.

I see this car is currently for sale on the Car & Classic Auction site (ends today I believe) and see it is identified as No. 200 (Empire Green) however the VIN number appears to be different. Interesting !
