Thread Restorers

Dear All:

One tool that has proven invaluable to me in working on older cars is my thread restoration kit. I bought mine at Sears but am pretty sure it is a generic set just re-branded for Sears. Here is the web-site showing the kit http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product. ... 0942275000

The kit does not have all of the metric threads that we encounter on our M100s, but it has most of the more common ones.

I find that I use this kit much more than I ever would have expected. It works better than actual taps and dies because there is less risk of your inadvertently cutting a second set of threads. After cleaning up the threads everything seems to go back together much more smoothly. More importantly, clean, straight threads enable you to get more accurate and reliable torque readings.

They are simple to use. Just put a couple of drops of oil on the threads you are trying to clean up and slowly screw the thread restorer onto the offending bolt or into the offending nut. Sometimes you need to repeat the process a couple of times before everythig is straight and true.
