Rust treatment

I had to remove the radiator today (thats another story ), and I was a bit shocked to see the state of some fo the metal work that I could see when having a good poke around in the exposed areas. I'm sure most of you recognise the areas where the thin film of black paint has come away from the metal work behind and bubbles/peels/flakes away?!?

Well, I've just bought some fe-123 rust convertor solution from HERE.

I was going to brush that directly onto the exposed sections but I'm not too sure about what to coat on top of that.

Has anyone got any good advice or tips that they wouldnt mind passing on?

I don't know about good advice or tips but the Hammerite rust killer and rust preventer were a waste of time.

The only good stuff I've heard of and seen performing is the POR15 system.

The best thing...

Remove it, strip it, treat it,restore the surface finish and then protect it..

It's down to your own personal preference as to which resources you use...

Just remember you can't polish a turd

I also think Hammerite is useless, did the chassis on my opel, stripped all loose rust off etc, spent ages, by the next year with little wet miles and the rear axle etc was all spotted with rust again

Painted silver PO15 on my rear Lotus subframe, not used a lot but boy is that stuff rock solid. And got to be careful, wipe all spills off with disposable old socks or similar. However, it needs to be out of sunlight and it would not be good for radiator fins. Im sure I left the old teaspoon I was using with some stuff on the concrete floor and it lifted part of teh concrete up with it when i removed it!!

If you around the herts area anytime pop around and have a look. A lot of websites recommend their products and there is a lot of information out there.
