WD40 and better alternatives

during my struggle with my current project im learning quite a few things, as part of that i came across this web page which has a comparison between WD40 and other lubricants helping with different tasks.

I know everyone has a different approach towards income management (in other words im tight even for Scottish standards ). but i would like to know if anyone else has tried different lubricants that are worth the difference in price and feedback.

I have never seen any of the other lubricants on sale but to be honest never paid attention, WD40 is what i have been using for 2 reasons, easy to get from pound shop, and the fact it is in the pound shop...

I've used both and found that PB is somewhat better than WD-40. The WD will work, it just takes longer for it to penetrate - often much longer with multiple applications required. Now, in my case, there was only minimal rusting and I used these penetrators as a precaution only to ensure I didn't strip the nuts and screw heads so it wasn't really a good test. The best thing I've done is to apply generous amounts of anti-seize compound to the threads on every screw I've every removed from the car. Never had a problem with a screw after that.

The link you provided suggests a home made brew that is easy to concoct and is reportedly better than anything off the shelf. Perhaps you should try it and tell us all how it works

WD40 was developed (here in San Diego, I might add) during WWII as a water-displacing light lubricant with the main purpose of ousting water and avoiding corrosion. It's not really designed as a lubricant. It is most certainly versatile, though.

I would never use it for an outdoor lightweight lubricant. It dries after about 2 weeks & you'll be back to where you started. I find a silicone-based lubricant lasts a lot longer. Silicone lubricant can be used indoors too.
If you want a penetrating oil then buy a product called...penetrating oil! It works much better than WD40 for the task it is designed.
If you want a lightweight lubricant which will burn off quite quickly, then WD40 is well suited.
As mentioned above, it was designed to expel moisture & does a good job at this.

After seeing this video i am a lot more tempted to follow that suggestion than when i first seen it.

the same guy has a video on making a air broom which i found really good.

ill have a look into prices of the items required to make the refillable can and the homebrew penetrating oil. i get paid next week so untill then there wont be any new purchases, currently on a all time low in my bank account, i didnt expect to spend soo much in my "little" project. also the fact that i found a very appealing premium didnt help lol

i have googled for that, apparently its either a well kepth secret, or just a urban myth, i am more inclined in urban myth knowing it was designed by to used in ICB Missiles... i do not rule out the possibility because as a software engineer i know for a fact that the best solution to a tricky problem is frequently a simplistic approach.

I double checked and alas, no, not the main ingredient. Snopes.com is our friend when chasing urban legends. It's possible the "corrosion inhibitor" or "wetting agent" is fish oil but still not the primary ingredient. Here's an excerpt, click for the full article:

"Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for WD-40 aerosol indicates the product is primarily petroleum-based, with the main ingredient being "solvent naptha, petroleum, medium aliphatic" (also known as Stoddard Solvent):

solvent naphtha petroleum, medium aliphatic, > 60%
petroleum base oil as paraffinic distillate, heavy, solvent-dewaxed (severe), 15% to 25%
corrosion inhibitor unregulated, 1% to 10%
wetting agent unregulated, 1% to 10%
fragrance unregulated, 0% to 1%
carbon dioxide, 2% to 3% "

Still performs its job quite well, if not swimmingly.

I have been using the mix (ATF acetone 50/50) for over a year when working on all cars in the family.
either
1- I haven't meet a hard nut since them
2- My tools/skill has improved considerably
3- This mix works.

its probably a bit of all, still I think its worth a try.

I just bought a spray can of "Rustyco Reactor"

It is supposed to work as an activator or catalyst for all WD40-like compounds and multi sprays.

Your doing it wrong, drink it instead!

this "Rustyco Reactor" seems an odd product. penetrating oils can have different compositions. a "global" product that works with all of them seems too good to be true.
Lets us know how it works.

Have one of those 'old hag plank"s from halfrauds for over 5 years, found it pretty useless. the wheels are too small and gets stuck in every imperfection in the floor.
An old thick carpet is my current solution. It helps slightly from getting a cold, my head no longer rests on a hard surface, and makes it pretty easy to make sure I am not losing tools.
