Elan N/A

Hello all,

I have recently bought an Elan, a spur of the moment decision, I didn't research them much. The Elan I bought turned out to be a non-turbo version, what are the chances of that. The car has only 61,000 miles and is very good mechanical, so I not to bothered about the turbo.

The brakes are crap, but i'm told all elans have poor stock brakes. If anyone has any info on cheap alternative upgrades I would be grateful.

Never mind about the N/A what you never had you can't miss

You are correct on the brakes, the stock ones are not really up to the job.

Your best bet for brakes will probably be Hi-Spec (~£700), or if you are feeling very flushed the APs (~£1500).

A lot of people get by through cleaning and refurbishing the stock calipers, going for stickier pads and maintaining them religiously, this would definitely be the cheaper option.

But they are for 16" wheels, so won't fit on your N/A if you still have the original 15" alloys

If you want to improve you're brakes without changing your calipers, then check out the thread on pads which Monty started. Its called 'pads' in the part cross-reference section. I'm in a lazy mood so can't be bothered to insert a hyperlink to the thread

You're gonna love your Elan. Forget the lack of turbo, you should find that you have bought a whole load of fun.

Thanks all for the replys, the info and help available through this site and members is amazing.

I think I will go down the refurb and maintaince route for my bakes first. I use the car everyday so I won't have any sticking problems.

I am really starting to enjoy the car now. I have fixed lots of little problems, eg themostate stuck open, causing it to run rich, heaters blocked with crap. complete service, (had fun removing the oil filter!) mollyslip in the oil. New stainless box and center section

Now the car runs 10 times better and quiter.

I've also order loads of rubber seals for the hood from vintage car supples. I'm sure one will be suitable. I'll do a right up if I successful.

Hello Mark,

Congrats on getting your Elan, I`ve had my N/A for five years and still love it to bits.
Mine must be the `POPLUAR PLUS` version as i haven`t even got PAS !

If you need any help with N/A specific bits (ignition system mainly), just ask Clemo or myself. They`re mostly the same as a Daewoo Nubira !

I will remember that if I have any ignition problems. Really enjoying the car now, using every day, sometime i get a little wet but wouldn't trade it, considering I nearly bought a Golf. Its using a little oil at the moment though!
