Greetings from a proud Lotus Elan owner from Singapore

Greetings to ALL proud Lotus Elan owners,

I just got a 1992 Lotus Elan Turbo Se in this beautiful island of Singapore and also probably one of the most 1992 Lotus Elan (owning a car in Singapore is expensive!).
Nonetheless, this piece of timeless gorgeous command great respect... LUV the curve lines, the superb design... that I decided to built it up, replace most necessary parts.
Currently in my mechanic workshop, I have a long part lists need to purchase.
ANYONE can recommend me to a reliable Elan parts seller?
My location is SINGAPORE.

Thank you Pete. Appreciate for the GREAT helps. I have emailed SJ for quotation for a long part lists. Am browsing thru Douglas Valley Breakers & Southwest Lotus and might consider shipping one wrecked elan back for spare parts if cost and shipping is much minimal.

I've heard from my colleagues over there that it costs a fortune in tax to own any car in Singapore.
Are Kia parts available over there? If so, this may be a useful source to parts common with the Kia Elan.

We have 1 or 2 other owners in Singapore. I can't remember who though.

Enlighten me with Kia Elan? Is it M100 or newer model? Sorry I am slow at this.
I know that Malaysia took over the Lotus and might be cheaper to buy some parts in KL. Perhaps let me have a sample part # as reference then I will ask around in Singapore & Malaysia

Yup owning a car in SG is really expensive. After a HARD bargain, I got the 92' Lotus Elan for SGD 42,000 (abt 25,000 pound), that is the cost of the used car.
My Elan ONLY entitled to drive till 2018, thereafter it has to scrapped off at $0 (cannot be on the road). You need to renew your entitlement (ie. to bid for a Certificate Of Entitlement-COE) which is about SGD60K-70K for another 10 yrs driving on the road. That is, you need to renew COE for every 10yrs (abt $60K-70K).

Apart from it, your annual road tax is about SGD1,000, 3rd party insurance is SGD 40000..
Variable cost will be petrol (depends), car park (avg $200 monthly) and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP)- another road tax; the more you drive, the more you tax.

"Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) is an electronic system of road pricing. It uses a dedicated short-range radio communication system to deduct ERP charges from smart-cards inserted in the in-vehicle units of vehicles each time they pass a pricing point when the system is in operation. The pay-when-you-use principle helps make motorist more aware of the true cost of driving. This way, road usage can be optimised."

Public transport is very effective here hence it is expensive to own a car here. Singaporean just live with it

Wow, that is expensive, you must have really wanted it; using today's exchange rate of 1SDG = 0.516 Stg, then you paid about £21k for the car (which is pretty equitable with what our American cousins seem to pay) and on top of that you have road tax of £500 and insurance of £20k plus your EPR. So 5 yr ownership costs something like: £125,000 Stg or £25k pa after which the car is scrapped (or you pay another £35k COE)

I guess on an island of only 30 sqr miles you might not have massive fuel costs and your EPR might not be too bad as a consequence.

I further speculate that these figure are only frightening when compared to a UK disposable income, much depends on a comparison of the local figures!

I think I'd use taxi's everywhere and buy a speed boat for thrills

Kia Elan:

When Lotus ceased production of the M100 in 1996, Kia bought the tooling & began manufacture. I am not sure how many examples they built though.

They used their own 1.8 engine instead of the Isuzu 1.6.
I believe they used the Fed body which had extra crash structure front & rear. This involved a longer front bumper with more recessed indicators.
They used a different rear light cluster.
I am not sure of other differences but I imagine there are quite a few.

As part of the deal, Kia agreed not to sell the car or spares anywhere where they would be competing with Lotus, so parts are difficult to get hold of in the UK. They may be easier for you in Singapore though.
