i am currently selling my weeked warrior car
its a 1954vw beetle powerd by a 2276cc na engine.
after doing some research on what to replace him with ..
a elan came out tops.
so here goes with the questions
do you realy have lots of mecanical issues with your cars ?
what you u say was the parts spend per year for a say 12k per year car?
i know the roofs leak and the b post covers always break
but what else should i lookout for ?
any models to avoid
best colour ( probably personal choice )
do all elans have leather seats with a stripe as std
whats the 1/4 mile time of a std elan

personally no (touches wood). The general opinion is that the engine is bomb proof with the exception of Cam angle sensors (19 quid from lotus)

depends on hard you drive really and how good the roads that you drive on are! I would say at 12k you should be thinking about a good annual service (full fluid and filter change). how long is a bit of string really.

no some have cloth, without stripe, half leather, full leather all combos in fact.

don't know not many are standard these days. depends what mods have been done. Costas's car (400bhp) should be able to beat 14s In fact it would be interesting to know.

if you want a std elan......
you have good years and bad.......so anything from £500 to £3000 allowing for service etc...unless you do it yourself

as mentioned the isuzu stuff seems to be pretty bombproof so its just like looking after a 'normal' car

no, some have...half leather....

Mines got half cloth. The only combination they don’t do is full cloth but the leather’s at the back so it’s not too bad.

I agree with Clemo, that there is nowt wrong with the NA.
You may want a turbo though, because it is easy to upgrade and this sounds like something you will want to do. A quick (£100) change of chip, and you instantly have an extra 40bhp.

The NAs are most uncommon too, so you will not find many (if any) available.

yes chip it would be one of the first things to do.

ok the rear wish bones what goes wrong with them rust stress fractures.

so if they rust whiping them off for a powder coat should preserve them in therory.

so std elans =165 bhp + chip = extra 40 bhp =205 bhp
i will have one of those badboys.

just as a point of interest i have a good buddy who runs a vw hi po import co from the states he is based near burton on trent.
he only imports vw stuff at the moment but

he makes up / has made up his own products inc custom intercoolers
stainless steel comp exhausts injection throttle boddies

turbos / hibrids whatever you want
wiring looms
he sells msd stuff ( replacment coil packs)
injectors
he also has a dyno (rwd only tho sorry)
he could proberly get any items of gm stuff imported in his air of sea shipments both monthly.

if there is any produts that u need i can ask him to get or just put u in contact with him.

Rear bones are prone to rust. S2s have galvanised ones, but also a cat. (Apparently the performance drop due to the cat is so slight that most people cannot tell, but it sounds like you may object to it )

There is a group buy for stainless bones, so you may wish to get some instead of powder coating the existing ones. If you can find an Elan for sale which you know needs new bones, you may be able to get it cheap enough to make this worthwhile.

Stainless exhausts are also available. Thanks to the turbo, these are supposed to produce a significant performance gain. I have yet to get mine done though.

Yes, ESM's Everest chip pushes the power output to above 200bhp with a stock exhaust.

The Elan's strength is not its straight line speed, but its cornering ability.
