It really is £900, according to Confused.com. my usual insurers wanted £500 for an S1 and wouldnt insure me on an S2! NUTS!

I wouldn't try "usual" insurers for a modern classic like the Elan - there are plenty of specialists around who will do a better rate, and who will also be more sympathetic to modifications when (inevitably) you start adding to what previous owners have done

The quotes you have seem at odds to what most of us pay for insurance and as said already you need to speak to the specialists. If the car is not going to be an every day car then a limited mileage and agreed value policy is the way to go. Peter james comes recommended by many and you might also like to try Classicline. There should not be an appreciable difference in insurance between a S2 and a SE, on paper the SE has more power than a S2 whereas the S2 is clearly a little newer. Driver age, experience and record are always going to be key insurance factors. Like many things as far as resprays go you pay for what you get. A good respray is all about the preparation and that is all about the labour involved which is what you are paying for. getting a quality finish on composite panels (glass fibre not carbon on the Elan) can be seen as a more specialist task than metal bodies but in my view that is as much to do with familiarity as anything else.

I agree … for the first three years I had mine on a fully comprehensive policy with Liverpool Victoria … during a conversation at renewal time they told me … had it been "written off" they would have looked upon it as "just an old car" and paid out accordingly
