I've only taken mine to a mechanic once. I needed a new crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer, if you prefer), and the thermostat outlet pipe was cracked (my fault) and needed replacing, and I wanted to change the timing belt and all drive belts at the same time. I didn't want to fool with doing all that myself. Although I did handle getting all the needed parts myself.
The shop I used is a generic import shop that had worked on my Isuzu Impulse several times, and had done a good job at a very fair price. They had always been easy to talk to/influence (ie, they don't get all superior when you try to tell them a little about "how to," like many places do). I provided them a copy of my CD of the service manuals, etc, and even printed a few things out for them to save them some time.
Anyway, to make a short story long, they did quite a good job, and I have found several little things fixed that weren't even on the menu at the time (the hood release cable had come out of the handle under the dash-they fixed it, the vacuum sending unit for the boost gauge needed to be re-mounted with new mounting hardware-they fixed it).
Obviously, a mechanic familiar with the Elan would be best, but I think any competent and trustworthy mechanic can handle it. I would make sure they don't have any problem with you bringing them infomation from here about specific jobs, when it's available. If they act like they'll ignore it, go somewhere else. If they say, "great," recognizing that they're going to be working on a rare, quirky car, and will themselves be learning, then give them a shot.
