Hi guys and girls - newbie from Oz

Hi there guys and girls,

I'm not quite a new owner yet (just waiting for an investment property to sell), but there is a beautiful Black 1994 S2 with a deposit paid - just waiting for me.

I am really pleased with the amount of information, help and ideas that are on this site, and a few things I have worked out already:
LMG (Marie) seems to be some sort of alien god - with un-natural skills and abilities in making Elans exquisite (will you have my babies ) ;
The dash that XXX built, is the most professional labuor of love I have come across, and has inspired me to do something similar - not quite as extreme and I like the white lockwood dials;
Mountain chips seem to be the way to go (if you want to keep your baby reasonably standard mechanically); and
I cant wait to get my new mistress.....

I'm an Electrical / Electronics Engineer, and live in Perth, Western Australia. I am happy to help anyone as much as I can with any electrical issues, and I usually end up designing a heap of alternatives and work arounds for my project cars. The prime candidates for the Elan seem to be the headlight control module, the coil pack issues (I intend to do a coil-on-plug modification), and I'll also be adding an aftermarket ECU sometime in the future.

All my mods have the "usual" plan of being better / faster / more reliable / prettier, but always done is such a way that the car can be returned to standard.

Anyone in the UK that wants to become an exceptionally goiod friend of mine and send some parts will be well appreciated as well. Getting Elan bits in Australia.............its possible, but so is walking on water.

Thank you. I'm blushing now. I still have a few unreleased mods up my sleve though. Zizi will have some new upgrades as well soon enough. I have a lot of work ahead of me to get my projects out and done.

Hi Jack, and welcome to LEC.

As and when you may want/need anything in particular, just post up a message, or send a PM, and I'll see what I can do to help.

(Un)fortunately, there are a fair few of us who have had the privilege (?) to be involved in acquisition and worldwide transport of anything from a couple of small bolts to a chassis and body tub!

LEC distribution systems are nearly as good as DHL (so probably better than Royal Mail!), and we can usually get parts to wherever they need to go - either quickly or cheaply, depending on the rush required, but I don't think anything has ever got lost yet!

There are parts on my car which have been up and down the UK (and from Germany/USA) via various people before ending up at my house, just to avoid paying over the odds on postage.

Jack, welcome to LEC. There a few Elan owners, past and present in your part of the world but it's not exactly the most common car down there I expect. As has been said by and large this is a community of like minded people willing to help each other out. By pooling skills, talents, and resources it's amazing what can be achieved. If you do need stuff then ask.

Is it the black one thats been for sale for a while? an S2 number 57 or 54 (I can never remember) if it is it will prob need some work, a mate looked at it a few years back and ran in the other direction... but the folks here are very helpfull The Elan factory in Melb is also very helpful if you have not found them already.

I only know of two black Elan's in Oz, the other is on the gold coast.

I think it might be the same one. It has been for sale for a while, and I know its in áverage' condition. but I am looking for a project, ant it will be personalised - I'll be posting my idea soon, and I would like feedback and experiences from anyone on my ideas.

I havent actually seen the car yet in the flesh (plastic), but i have many photos. So far I can see:
1. the hood needs replacing;
2. all the rubbers need replacing;
3. the boot has been resprayed - no badges (doesnt seem to have been accident damage, dealer claims paint was crazed);
4. seats = average;
5. some underbody damage to the tub - speed hump impact?????. Chassis seems ok.

I'm OK with all that, and I think its worth about $16k tops, with about $4k of bits needed - mostly rubbers from the UK (hood seals, window seals, A pillar seals, door seals) but I will check local compatability first, and the hood itself - should be able to get a reline from someone here.

Do you know if there were any mechanical issues? Might save me a flight.

I can do 99% of the work myself, electrics - easy, fibreglass - easy, but any 'major' mechanical will need help.

I woldnt mind having a chat if you send a phone number.

OK, turns out the Black car was a real basket case, and the dealer was a wanker.

So the search goes on.

I'm looking at Junks grape juice coloured version in the UK - import issues, a blue one (yuck) that the guy is really dreaming on the price - asking about $6-8k more than its worth, all be it, it is a nice car, and a BRG one which seems about perfect.

So I think its BRG at the moment. I'll be flying over shortly to check it out.
