NA Red Elan Reg G594 FJK

Hi Guys,

As you might know I bought Sarah's NA Elan from her forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=17626 and it has run perfectly since collection.

I intend to get her resprayed in the original red (the car - not Sarah!) and retrimmed. (Any suggestions on what colour leather to choose and if fitting a new red carpet would be the way to go!)

You might remember that there was some discussion regarding the history as she is registered in September 1991 but sports a 'G' plate as she was 'manufactured in 1990'

I have noticed that a lot of the panels have writing on them and when I took the dash trim / panel out today it is clearly a handmade unit with folded metal supports and again writing on saying "Repair 26/01/90" and "Repaired 08/02/90" and initialled by whoever did the work.

I need to speak to Lotus HO and get the details for the car but I'm assuming that she is a pre-production prototype model.

Any thoughts anyone?

congratulations on your very wise choice of an NA,
where less is more ...

all elans have things writtern on all panels , i had a late s2 that had "almost over" writtern with a late date on the inside of the bumper!
that said , repaired is unusual and would make me think that it may have been down the (millbrook?) test track thumping in the miles to see what would brake,
and as writtern , it did.
there are some old pictures on here somewhere of pre production cars and numbers, what was the engine number , i think i did ask at the time.
can you host some photos of these markings ?

I know a bit about the preproduction cars... 3 of the 9 are on the LEC

car No IB3 was meant to be a red N/A
Car No IB4 was meant to be a silver Turbo
Car No IB5 was meant to be a silver Turbo

what actually happened...

car No IB3 was a silver N/A with a turbo VIN, the front clam is off IB4, the doors are off IB5 or IB7 and IB5 or IB4
car No IB4 was a red turbo with an N/A VIN, IB4 rolled off the production line after IB3, but was registerd on the road before IB3...
car No IB5 was a silver turbo, but IB3 has one of it's doors (possibly)


I know there was an earlier N/A before the Preproductions which was a show car, not one of the development cars and that was meant to be red.

If your car is an early varient it would have side locking on the hood cover, not the two centre retaining mounts.
