Oh, and the monster socket is 32mm - you shoulds be able to buy one from Halfords (or Geoff).
I got the oil seal from SJ's - less than a tenner.
Specky's point about knocking out the peined point on the nut is a good one - I've been able to re-use them quite a few times using that method.

Of the other possibilities what about the jackshaft bearing - is that a likely candidate? (Although you wouldn’t think it would be worse under load)

Bearing on gearbox output shaft
Differential bearing
Jackshaft bearing
Inner CV
Outer CV
Wheel bearing
Cracked disc

Check out the cas as has already been mentioned. The bearing on them can go noisy too.

thankyou to all for you suggestions, hopefully i'll hear from chris foulds in the next couple days, but in the mean time ive taken up a very kind offer from rayd who will cast his far more knowledgble eye over the car. I do still need to remove the gearbox as the BRG has to be stripped to get some money together to get loki spot on.

I think i might start documenting my work for a source of info for other new comers.

From what ive read the hub nut can be a nightmare to remove, but for referance its 32mm.

will keep you all posted on progress

and again thankyou very much. :D

But you only need one of them......

To give you some idea, I had to borrow a 2 foot SnapOn breaker bar from a mate in a garage and add a 6 foot scaffolding pole. My Halfords bar just wasn't up to the job and was close to opening up and popping apart!

Just a thought, whilst i would put my best guess on the inner CV joint, on my red one i had a similar noise which ended up taking 3 months to find and 4 minutes to fix!

It ended up being the 2 bolts which hold the centre bearing on the OS driveshaft to the engine block - slightly (?) loose - a couple of turns with a 14mm spanner and the noise dissapeared.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks for that Dave,

I’ll make a point of checking it tomorrow. If anyone else thinks of anything it might be, let us know.

Bearing on gearbox output shaft
Differential bearing
Jackshaft bearing (including fixing bolts)
Inner CV
Outer CV
Wheel bearing

First off i want to thank Ray for taking time out of his day to look over my car, im very greatful and i think youve saved me alot of hassle.

the findings....

theres a bit of free play (not the designed in kind) in the offside driveshaft, less but still some in the nearside, the intermediate bearing looks to be the source and possibley the cv joints, so im now considering replacing both the driveshafts, with the cv joints and the intermediate bearing, either from the brg or if its not too expensive all new.

the question is what part number or numbers am i looking for, where's is the best (ie cheapest) place to get them, and if these anything else i should know please post below. :-D

The driveshaft assemblies come complete with both inner and outer CV (and new boots and ready greased of course).
I got mine for £93.61 + VAT from the parts sale back at the end of Nov.

ooh thats what im after and at that price i could afford them.... im off to find these...

Elan C100R0002F R/H DRIVESHAFT 49 356.69 93.61

DRIVE SHAFT SNAP RING (End of L/H driveshaft) A100R6001F EACH 1.84 (maybe be optional is one is carful)
DRIVESHAFT SNAP RING (R/H end of centre shaft) A100F6059F EACH 0.68 (maybe be optional is one is carful)

Thanks Matt,

Out of interest...

The bearing bracket on the intermediate shaft only had the top bolt fitted – tightly - with the bottom one missing altogether. Unfortunately there wasn’t any movement in the bracket to make you think fitting a new bolt would solve the problem.

The intermediate shaft bearing and both inner CV’s are worn; you can rattle the drive shafts from side to side and produce a metallic sound, while my 40,000 mile versions have a slight movement but without the soundtrack. There was no rotational movement on either.

It’s almost certain the noise is coming from the drive shafts... but due to general wear rather than a particular problem.

I take it they don’t come as part of the drive shaft then Jay? :(

When you get chance to have a look at it ...Is it obvious how the bearing comes off the intermediate shaft, and are the bearings available separately?

You should only need 1 oil seal, no snap rings, and (assuming you've got the hang of it by the time you get to the 2nd one) 1 hub nut.

Nope.

RayD wrote:When you get chance to have a look at it ...Is it obvious how the bearing comes off the intermediate shaft, and are the bearings available separately?

Ray

It's highly unlikely that you'll need that anyway - the jackshaft is highly unlikely to wear out - the inner CV will go first.

The intermediate shaft bearing needs changing Neil, I was trying to find out if it was easily detachable and available as a spare part...

The jack shaft is completely separate (not part of the driveshaft assemblies) and is not available, so it would be worth investigating the bearings if you can Ray.

[For some reason this didn't post earlier!]

Reading what Ray says, Matt needs one and ESM had one go last year - as they aren't available, it would be good if we could get some alternatives for the bearing.

Fairy nuff. When I responded previously I was concentrating on the "It’s almost certain the noise is coming from the drive shafts" comment.
We could really do with the input of someone who already has access to the jackshaft assembly to see if they can get the bearing number off the jackshaft and see if it's easily removable from the rest of the assembly.
Off the top of my head I'm thinking either Monty or Specky...?
