The Clim is ready for charging now that I’ve replenished the compressors PAG with the 60 cc correct amount, but I thought I’d have another go at the tick over and hopefully the running rich problems. To that end I took off the accelerator butterfly housing and EGR valve, after cleaning, new gaskets and replacing, every thing is the same. Tick over at 1200 and soot in the exhaust. One thing I did notice is that the revs don’t drop as quickly as I would have thought when the accelerator is blipped. I’ve checked the base timing that’s at 7 btdc. All the vacuum take offs appear good. Any ideas ?

Hey Chriso,
From the service manual, it looks like the ports are indeed different sizes.
Also, you say your engine is set at 7 BTDC...isn't it supposed to be 16?

Hi T H
Yes, they are different threads but the high pressure adaptor won’t fit. Both of the Schraeder valves look the same but I’ll check with a vernier. The timing was set at 16, I’d forgotten but I’ll check it hasn’t moved as soon as I get time. Simon Paish, thought that the exhaust normally looked black, it doesn’t smell rich but that’s with my rugby damaged nose.
At the moment I’m trying to fix a leak under a French window that leads out onto a balcony. Jennifer has different priorities!!!

My first attempt at recharging the Clim was terrible. It wasn’t until I was using the last tin that I noticed it said “ invert the can when charging”. Doah ! I’ll get some more ordered and try again.
The charging converters to move to R134a have proved problematic. The low pressure side was fine and screwed onto the original Schraeder without a problem. The original high pressure Schraeder looks to be M10 but the converter is an M12 or something similar. I’m reluctant to buy another set as I might just finish up with another set I can’t use. Is there an adaptor. Any thoughts ?

take the folowing with a pinch of salt, as i have almoust zero experience with AC systems (my experience is filling up the toyota with it, seeing it working for a day, then investigating the matter and finding miultiple leaks in the piping as well as the condenser.... and never touching it ever again )
thread adaptors should exist.
when i found myself in similar problem with the replacement oil cooler after a bit of research i came across suitable ones.
however your mileage may vary because you need something that wont leak refrigerant.
i would suggest googling for adapters and more importantly if PTFE tape is suitable to insulate AC fixings. you may end up needing to use something specific to seal the connections.

If you can't find a proper adapter, you could just let it be. You only need the low pressure port to refill the system. It will impair your ability to troubleshoot and make sure there isn't a high pressure spike/imbalance, but you could take a gamble.
Good luck!
