After that little escapade I looked at a couple of mint cars, but their prices precluded purchase. Then, whilst on a course at RAF Marham, I bought the local paper and low and behold, there was another BRG that fitted the bill and was within my budget. I phoned the owner, he was an RAF techie who worked at Marham, brilliant, thought I, when can I see the car? He explained that he didn't bring the car down to camp and that it was in...Yorkshire!
Oh, not again!
I bet you can guess my next confirmatory question...it was an SE!
It was two weeks before I could meet up with this guy at his home in Doncaster?, but we'd spoken several times and I was almost convinced.
On inspection, the car was tidy, the rear wishbones were neglected but generally sound and the hood was faded grey (where it wasn't mildew green), and the rear window had been replaced - at a slight angle. If he hadn't been agreeable to my vastly reduced offer (on the strength of the faults listed), I wouldn't have bought her. But, buy her I did, and drove her home, bending my neck all the way down the M6 so that I could see more than fifteen yards in front of the bonnet.
Standard, she may have been, but my first adaptations were, the removal of the driver's sun visor, and the rear spacers of the driver's seat. I didn't realise then that this was the beginning of (as Dave Meyers puts it) Project Creep!
This first picture is actually one of the previous owner's sales pictures, but it shows the fact that she had the red striped seats and optional red carpets. Once upon a time she was standard:
This is the very first picture of my Elan at her new home. Taken about 5 minutes after arrival on the day of purchase.
Apart from the necessary (for safety reasons) changes that I made immediately after the purchase, the car remained pretty standard for quite some time. I was still in NI and most of my time (when at home) was taken up by catching up with the family and driving the Elan at every excuse imaginable.
Well, she's still standard here, so it must be an early picture (taken outside the ill-fated Team Proactive garage, in Aston, Birmingham). Nestled nicely, in amongst the chest wig wearing-owned TVRs. I went to Proactive to talk about resprays, because the car's lacquer was just starting to erupt with the usual Lotus leprosy.
