1991 SE turbo oil cooler hoses

Hi,

Recently bought said car and just going through a list of things to be done. During the inspection of the drivers front wheel arch I found that the oil cooler isn't a standard elan part and is held in by sealant ... The cooler hoses are wrong too ...

In order to put things right I'm looking for a pair of oil cooler hoses with banjo ends on the cooler side, maybe an oil cooler too if anyone has such a thing.

Any help appreciated.

Soon after I bought my Elan, I had to replace the oil cooler when the matrix started leaking. At that time (2018??), I found that the oil cooler pipes weren’t available. However, I took the old ones to Pirtek in Bristol, and they were able to fit new pipes to the old (existing) connectors. Refitted to the car and has worked perfectly ever since.

As Jonathan says, getting the 'old' metal ends (with the screw connectors) swaged onto a new bit of pipe with a banjo on the other end is something that any hydraulic place will be able to do for you.... although Pirtek always get mentioned, there are others out there!

The problem comes when trying to replace them with an aftermarket pipe - it appears that the thread used isn't at all 'common' and there are no off-the-shelf parts that can be joined...... so if you want to go that direction, then the whole pipe system will need to be removed and replaced - not that difficult to do, but as the OE metal parts of the pipe are 99.99% undamaged and re-usable, it isn't something that has been explored greatly.

One of the previous owners has removed the banjo's from the standard hoses and replaced them with 90 degree bends hence my looking for hoses with banjo's to get back to standard. The new ends don't help in securing the oil cooler as it doesn't have elan style fixing plates and is now too high/tall to push forward into the oil cooler duct proper.

It isn't leaking as it is, the hoses are a bit tight, could do with being an inch or two longer, maybe the banjo ends would fix that. It seems like something I should put right ...

If anyone has some old hoses I could get the banjos off that would be a very good start in making it standard again.
