Head gasket - Yes or No?

Postby muley » Thu 19.03.2009, 20:22

So, I'm halfway through the turbo and cambelt job and it suddenly struck me - should I change the head gasket?. At this stage I've still got the crank pulley off and the exhaust manifold is off.

Car has 93,000 on the clock and a patchy history.

What does the LEC massive think - should I do the head gasket as well while I'm here ?

I am already going to replace the fans and hoses btw.

No. In fact HELL no! You don't want to disturb that lot if you don't have to.
That's one job where if it ain't broke you don't want to try fixing it - leave well alone.

There is an old saying that I have learned over and over again and in moments of weakness I screw-up again and forget what I have learned:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Jim, thats a bloody good question.

and i`d tend to side on the Yes, thats if your doing it your self and it will only cost you the price off the Head gasket :?

The reason i say this is that i believe there`s many Elans out there that have a HG failing and don`t know it, mine only showed up when i started doing trackdays and only then i only got a slight rise in coolant temp but it caused my Rad to leak

It`s a tough decision.
