I like that :)

Are 3M Scotch Weld DP-8005 and DP-8010 possible contenders either?

I appriciate anything low viscosity is unlikely to work well as a sealer - these are a twin-pack style acrylic based?

I quite fancied 4693H - even though it's a contact style, it's high viscosity so would possibly build to some degree? (or could I mix some HDPE filings in with it!)

We mix our scotch clad with micro ballons (Glass beads), awsum strength.

Must dash, I'll check out some of your ideas tomorrow.

I always thougt that the glass beads are there to ensure a minimal layer thickness of the glue, not for structural enhancing?

I like Loctite. On page 34, 406 with 770 activator look good - just don't look at the price.

Indeed - the trick here of course being the 770 - not an activator but a polyolefin primer.

Comes back to the acknowledged problem of getting a surface key to the HDPE...

I'm still feeling quite tempted to puddle hot melt glue on it - at least that's flexible and could probably be forced to knit into the HDPE - not to sure about it's fuel stability though...

I might practice on a milk bottle first

Another option is to find someone who does plastic welding as it can be welded.

Would that be that far removed from a High density HMA stick in a glue gun? lol

It's like welding metal and it requires the correct rod so if the tank is HDPE then you use HDPE rods and all the same constaints as welding metal apply like it must be clean and prepared correctly. The again it must be clean for the glue to stick!

Cleanliness goes without saying; so potentially these
HDPE-Plastic-Welding-Rods
and a hot knife tip on the old iron could be an option?

Now.. what's the auto-ignition point of petrol?.... :-? - I find myself thinking a cold solution may be safer...

Reading up on this, welding could be the way forward;

There do seem to be conflicting reports as to the need for a nitrogen gas shield - some say needed, some say optional..

As I have a fine nozzle temperature controlled hot air gun use for electronics work, I'll have a practice on some HDPE scraps, see how I get on...

If it needs much over 200C, I'll have to flush the tank out though :(

I've used my soldering iron on a low setting to fix broken plastic before (nothing as critical as a fuel tank though) and you don't need anywhere near 200°C.

Aren't plumbing waste pipes HDPE or MDPE? If so, they can be solvent welded......

No they're PVC and use PVC cement to melt and join.

Just checked out some of the above mentioned items, oil resistance products won't normally do the job, you'll need fuel and oil resistance.

If you go for the plastic weld option on the neck, think about carrying out a seperate reinforcing repair around the neck to prevent it cracking again somewhere else.

wishing you success.

I was thinking of PEX but it's a cross linked PE and only uses mechanical fittings. Back to the hot air gun Gordon!

I think I'm going to go down the hot air route, with filler rod..

I intend to strengthen the whole area - I also have a theory as to why it's split - but I need to take more pictures to try and explain it..

Wonder if you could get a heatshrink tube big enough to finish it all off? Maybe something like these. I see that the hot melt adhesive used is 3M's TTS-250.

There was never any recall of UK tanks (to my knowledge) - anyway, it's a 20yr old petrol tank - I think it's done quite well...

When I was looking into this it looked to me like welding was the best way to go.

Having looked a little closer at where the filler neck has failed, it's apparent that the two cracks seem to be diametrically opposed.

I was wondering if anyone who has a tank off the car at the moment, could look at their filler neck and see if there is a mold line or any other indication as to why the neck failed at that point?
