Custom Rear Hubs, Bearings & Discs

This is a topic only for interest of new versions of the custom rear hubs made in carbon alloy steel. These hubs will allow you to fit any 4x100 PCD brake disc to the rear of your Elan, offering a better choice of disks, options for brake balance adjustments, better or different calipers, or simply being able to change discs going forward for £25 instead of £200.

They will either be produced to 2nd-gen spec or perhaps a 3rd generation in a stronger alloy. This may allow a custom offset to be achieved - although all orders are for STANDARD SPEC just now - i.e. direct retrofit.

Target price is approx £130-140 for the PAIR of hubs, £25 for bearings & seals, to be pressed in and supplied ready to fit, plus approx £25 for discs which we can source and supply, or you can source yourself. Delivery £10 the set. Price obviously depends on interest; we need at least 10 people to get this going.

Please lets collate interest below to allow me to continue dialogue with the various suppliers, discussion can be done in the general Machined Parts thread.

Initial run will be 10-20 sets i.e. 20-40 hubs + parts. Dependent on interest this may be one time only.

Is this the same as Bob Brown's rear hub conversion?

Can I use them with 15mm wheel spacers (needed to match the front, due to my AP brake caliper conversion, not so 'custom built' kit )?

Back in October 2012 I was on a list for this with Bob Brown. I presume it died. Please add me to this list, thank you. My Elan is great, just wish I could stop it!!! I am thinking of doing the front. Hi Spec route I think.

Sorry Karl,

My thoughts are that as these are a safe, high-tensile replacement hub, not an adaptor or bodge, there is no reason they cannot be used with aftermarket spacers. Aluminium hubs might not be suitable but thats the limit of my understanding and as ever any advice given here is subject to your own judgement and risk.

If the hub depth can be changed at will its possible, and I will enquire, that you can be provided with a hub that is 15mm deeper at the face. This is obviously a better option than spacers.

BTW I received the cover - I've just not opened it yet - thanks for that.

only for use with aftermarket wheels.......but you'd need to know a width to work with so I think it may come as standard (or I hope so)....
otherwise you'd then need the same offset as was set and your original wheels wouldn't work.....

roughly speaking

exactly. I put it into capital letters but just to be 100% clear once more all we are looking at for now is exactly as previous produced - these will not change anything on your car.

but in the future as achieving the desired +60mm offset initially intended by Lotus is impossible with most aftermarket wheels; if the hubs could be produced say 5mm thinner in profile, you could take a 48mm offset wheel and obtain an offset of 53mm.

Whether possible or not, I do not know, but to my mind it seems something easy in terms of production - whether the tensile strength would not be sufficient if thinned I do not know but there are some higher tensile alternative materials. Its all theoretical and I wish I'd just left it in the Machined Parts thread where we can talk about possibilities such as this.

Hi Jeemy, I hope this is the right place to write this. Firstly I would like to thank you so much for doing this, I certainly appreciate the hard work you have let yourself in for, so again Thank you. My question (may have been answered elsewhere but) when you get enough people to set the 'process' in motion, how long do you think it will take before they are ready? As said I am going to do the front as well, getting kit from PNM (I will let everyone know how that goes), so am wondering if I can do it all at the same time, or whether I do front first as I wait for the Custom rear hubs etc.

:agree:

I'll give it a try on the 'standard' replacement :-D
