Project Car

Postby quickro » Thu 18.05.2023, 15:26

I'm looking for a project car that needs work rather than parts as its biggest issue, I'm willing to travel but based in Oxford.

I m more mechanically minded than body work, and have a reasonable level of experience in a wide variety of cars.

Budget up to ~£4.5K , i realise this limits the market place but i thought i would chance my arm here to see what is about.

I currently have a daily Smart Roadster which will be sold to part fund this, unless that might be of interest to any one ( PX)

Thanks for reading.

Hi James, and welcome to LEC.

The Elan market is really strange at the moment - for the past few years there have been zero project cars coming to market, then over the past 6 months or so I have seen 4 or 5 (probably even more!)..... I got one for myself (well, for the wife when it's finished, as she won't drive mine), and have seen 2 recently on the Facebook groups.... it may be worth you while asking on there as well, as it gets a more diverse membership than here, where we tend to keep them forever (but I got mine from on here, so you never know!).
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

go on - click this link - you know you want to!

Thanks for the welcome. I did watch this forum a couple of years ago and as you say the market seems very different ( Esp. prices).
I have joined a couple of the FB groups and already been saved a trip up north to look at a car which has been outed as being questionable at best.

So still looking

If you see any that interest you, it is always asking on here if anyone knows the car (or seller) - whilst the off one comes up that no-one knows about, there are people on here who have been into Elans for so long that they have seen almost the entire production run change hands many times.

There are very few that have no known history - but there are always some.

I know that it may be a bit of a double-edged sword to ask about a car, as if it is a real bargain, it opens it up for someone else to swoop in like a vulture - but at least on this forum, that is less likely than on some of the other groups where there are often multiple people interested in the same thing.

If you are in Oxford it may be worth coming to Castle Coombe this Saturday to look over some M100 (not for sale) and have a word with the owners to see what you should look out for.

i have a very vague recollection of coming across a Hxxx XYL a years ago as a project (sometime before 2018). i tried to buy it but someone snatched it before i got the chance. keep in mind this is a vague recollection, but i think it was colapso red and in need of a respray but mechanically running ok.

wondering what are the chances of more than one Elan having that number plate pattern.
