New Gear Knob

Postby paulwatkins » Sat 08.09.2007, 12:44

Just fitted a Momo Race Air Full Leather gear knob.

The bore is virtually the full height of the knob so by placing it down as far as it would go, it has considerably reduced the overall height of the shifter and hence reduced the length of the throw. Happy with this as it mean't I didnt have to cut the lever down to get it to the height that I wanted.

I can now change gear without inflicting injury to my elbow by not hitting it into the storage compartment on the centre console! :-D

Things should be further improved when I get around to fitting Dave's short shift kit!

It does look rather large in that pic doesn't it. I think it may of been magnified a bit with the macro setting on my camera :-D

It feels nice in my hand! But then my hands are on the huge side!

I'll have a look tomorrow, cant be bothered now.

BTW Dico, how much downtime to fit the short shift kit? Any tips to pass on to a short shift kit fitting newbie? I was going to leave it til the winter, but i'm itching to try it out.

Paul,

Have you got AB cables to fit at the same time, or have you already done them? (Sorry I can't remember)
The reason I ask is that the fitting of the short shift kit is pretty quick - only a couple of hours tops, but by reducing the throw you have to up the force required.
If you halve the throw you have to double the force.
So because you're putting double the force into the same gear cables, it can finish them off if you're not careful.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

'Apparently' it takes shortshiftdave 20 mins

It took me over two hours on my own car, about 1 1/2 on flippers.
But then I didn't remove the selector. Fortunately nothing was too tight.
I'm a bit cr@p at explaining things and i'm completely useless with instructions. Give me pictures any day!
I found some pics that Monty posted on Daves original thread, then took my laptop to the garage and did it that way.
Its really straight forward when you know how, but then isn't everything.

I've got OE cables, but they look as though they are not the original ones fitted to the car. They look fairly new - so I think I'll take a chance with them.

I've got a couple of weeks off end of Sept so I think I'll tackle the job then ready for the IofM trip. Or is that a bad idea? I need to think about that a bit.

Any case thanks for the info guys, I'll be sure to read through the short shift thread before starting.

YES Dave fitted mine and it took him an hour or so as the the aircon gets in the way.

But thankfully he persevered and its now fitted and I'm really impressed.

Paul the aircon is excellent for demisting the windows and keeps you cool.

The only down side for aircon I can see is the obvious weight of it and also it uses 5 BHP.

But as I have 205 BHP I'm happy to have it.

The one air-conned Elan I have seen has its ALDL in a more awkward location.

Rather you than me.
I would much rather shed the weight and have my horses back. :smt077

Lotus logo knob on ebay

Postby tweetdriver63 » Thu 13.09.2007, 06:04

I've found this shift knob on ebay. The seller has several styles, and colors, made to order. There's another listing where the Lotus logo is on the yellow background instead of black.

I'm probably going to get one of these, but I haven't decided which. I plan to get my seats re-covered with the center parts red, and the rest black, and with red piping. I also will get the red stripe done on the door insets, and black and red for both gaiters. If I do all that, which knob do you guys think would go best? Red, black, or chrome? I'm definitely going to go with the black background Lotus logo.
