First of all I'm no expert whatsoever but i have an elanscan of my own car at idle and i have compared with Jon's. I adusted the time scale to match and frankly apart from the coolant temp there was no comparison in the figures. I know that my car is running fine. I'm going to regret that

I did a stationary scan on the same day and apart from time, there was no discernable difference as well....

except:-

quite a few of the spikes on the traces were higher, mine was a little smoother, but the mid posistion was the same...

Sounds like Rushing's before the Hall Sensor was replaced.

I would think it's the other way round......

....the Hall Sensor (or CAS bearing play) would cause the symptoms you are experiencing.

That does sound awesomely and worryingly familiar. I wonder whether you'd fancy having a look at mine next time I'm 'Oop North'?

If you can access and unbolt the plastic CAS cover and see if the disc underneath it has any rotational play (anything more than a couple of degrees that is), then you may quickly find your answer.

Meanwhile can you get the timing checked?

Oh and BTW Nottingham is East Midlands, not North!

I thought these disks were aluminium? Is this corrosion likely to be affecting its operation ?
What's an acceptable degree of play in the disk... I have about 2mm at its edge. I did seem
to have a fair amount of scatter when I last set the base timing.

Um, if it was aluminium then the magnet wouldn't work!
Might be worth (gently) holding some wet emery paper against it while it's running - cleaning up the circumference wouldn't hurt.
You need to be careful that the magnet doesn't pick up loads of iron filings though or it'll completely confuse it, and be especially careful not to catch your fingers!
Then when the disc's nice and shiny, give it a light coating of WD40.

Uh, fair point. Though in my defence I was thinking of the phenomenon where eddy currents can be induced in an aluminium disk spinning in a magnetic field. Not relevant I know now.
Anyway, I removed the whole assembly from the car, cleaned it up, and replaced the Hall sensor for good measure.
