Caveat emptor. The customs bill always arrives just when you think you've got away with it :(

Last time I got some parts from USA, I had to collect them from Royal Mail sorting office and pay the customs fee to them, before they would hand them over. If Stef has already got the bits, I think (hope :) ) that no further costs will be due.

Stef you have a PM.

Yep, all parts received.

So hopefully no forecoming bills...

Hi Steff,
I have just picked up on this thread :asleep: :asleep: (I dont have an Elan anymore :( )
The water pump was replaced last time round along with the belts so the cam belt will be ok
until later this year, and that's going by age and not mileage.

Thanks Jimbo. Think it was last done 2007 from the records.

No rush to change but wanted to get prepared to do it!

Can't wait to finish taking Blipi apart, free up my garage, fit an electric door 8) and keep her housed properly. Trying not to use here much in this weather! She's being well loved :)

I know I've missed the boat for this particular order but I also need to replace my cambelt so I'm looking for the most cost effective way to do it. This WP169K1A kit seems to be the answer so does anyone else want to double up on an order to save on postage???

Also, I presume all the parts in the kit are the same for the SE & S2 (mine's an S2).

How long to Rockauto usually take to deliver??? My car is booked in at my lotus dealer for service on 12th Mar so need to get my hands on the cambelt etc by then.

Finally, my dealer is happy to fit parts supplied by me but he wanted me to make sure its definitely ok before fitting. I presume as it seems to be recomended here it's fine???

I just noticed this thread. My timing belt change was done a year ago with parts purchased from a local store in Northern California (Allied Auto - Fremont). Perhaps I missed it in this thread, but it is a good idea to do the crankshaft and camshaft seals at the same time. Like the water pump, you have to remove the timing belt to replace them.

FYI, I just bought the WP169K1A kit from Advanceautoparts.com for $104.99 and used coupon code WD4 and got $50 off. I added in a cam seal kit (2 seals) and a crankshaft seal kit (1 seal and a gasket) and 2 bottles of washer fluid so I'd get to $75 and get free shipping. This works for those of us in the USA, not sure about international shipping though.

By the way, my Elan only has 20K miles on it, but the belt has never been changed. I'm assuming I need to do this ASAP, right?

Rock Auto Part# 95169K1 is the kit without the water pump for $34.79

There was a complaint about the water pump not having the correct gear tooth profile.

Beck Arnley pump is RA Part# 312115 and last ones received had the correct profile. It is $41.79

RA has other water pumps as low as $24.00. I don't know about their gear profiles though.

Hmmm... Well, that makes my $75 not seem like TOO great of a deal, but mine did include the cam and crankshaft seal. Even so, it's only a small difference, but if the water pump is not useable, it's a huge waste of time...

By the way, the part number on the Beck Arnley pump is 1312115

Thanks for the correction. I find I dyslex numbers a lot.

Just check the pump with the belt and make sure they mate correctly. I hope you don't have a problem. Let everyone know what you find. Maybe Dayco had a bad batch of pumps last year...

I think you found a good deal especially with the discount and free shipping. RA doesn't stock the complete kit anymore, so that holds up delivery too. Instead of the seals, you could get temp sensors, a thermostat and gasket or new frive belts (easier to replace them while you are doing the timing belt) - other bits that often need replacement.

If you need anything, I am only a few miles away. Maybe you will get the car to NC someday, I'd like to meet it...

Cheers!

Can you post a note when you get the pump to confirm its ok as I'm going to put a message out in the next month or so to see if anyone else in the UK wants a group buy like Stef did last year as mine is due again this summer and i don't want to have to send back anything. doesn't seem like i've had the car nearly 5 years :burnout:

Just had the cambelt, idler and tensioner replaced on mine (while gearbox and clutch were being done)

Garage called me to say I was a very luck boy!!!! cambelt was fine.......................but running very loose - tensioner was not working properly!!!!!

I replaced all of this less then 20,000 miles ago, but it was 6 years ago!

No SJSportscars - did not have the time to wait for Rockauto - also Steve has sourced some replacements which are better priced now

Definitely I confirm.
I sourced a Bosch water pump from Rock Auto despite their disuasive transport fee... and that was the right decision: teeth shape was perfect fit and didn't had to face anymore refusal from my garage :D
