Tech 1 Scanner tool (Wirral)

The engine management part of the manual refers to codes from a TECH 1 scanner. Are these easily available if so from where and how much? I live on the Wirral is there anyone nearby who could show me how such a tool works and test my car for these much referred to and apparently revered errors. Cheers Tony

The Tech 1 tool is the "garage issue" tool for receiving diagnostic information from the Engine Management System.

Do a search of the forum for Elanscan. This is a windows/pc based software for doing the same job. The software is free and can be downloaded from ESM's (the forum user) website.

In addition to the software you'll need a cable to connect the computer to the port on the car, PM GeoffSmith as he was putting some of these together before, I don't know if he's finished the run yet, or if you can wield a soldering iron, the schematics are also on ESM's website.

If you just want to pull codes, can't you do that with a paperclip or short piece of wire? Most GM OBD-I ECM's have a way of doing this, they flash out the codes via the check engine light.

I believe on your cars all you would need to do is connect a paperclip into the rightmost bottom two pinouts (the A and B) of the ALDL and turn the car to the run position.

Again, I don't own an Elan though, so take it for what it's worth (maybe I should change my signature to a standard disclaimer!)

But I recently got a tech2 diagnostics tool.

Is there software avalaible to use with the Elan?

Correct, so the hardware isn't even compatible.

It is supposed to do OBD1 also, and I thought the Lotus used the tech1?
Maybe there isn't a PCMCIA card for Lotus for the tech2- but I think it comes with an adapter that would plug into the car.
Looks like it anyway.
