Getting "bad echo" from ElanScan

Hi,
So I resurrected an old Windows XP Dell laptop that has a copy of ElanScan ca. 2005, connected a USB cable to the ALDL and tried it. I'm getting "bad echo" when I click "start talking". The program is set to Com port 1 and I tried several of the USB connectors on the laptop. Note that I had previously canceled out of the Windows "found new hardware" dialog after connecting the USB cable.

Any thoughts? Bad ALDL? Bad cable? Software incompatibility?

Update--I probably didn't have the USB drivers installed. Another thread in this forum provided links for drivers which I downloaded and tried to install on my XP machine per the instructions in the thread. However when running the "found new hardware" wizard, after selecting the directory containing the unzipped drivers I get the "cannot install this hardware" dialog and I'm stuck.

Thoughts?
