what is this?

Today I was looking at the rear of the engine bay and came across this

. Has anyone any idea what it is? Should it be connected to something (if so what), should it be capped or left as is?

Looks like a vacuum line with a one-way valve fitted. I don't recognize it though.

Where does the other end go?

The hose looks to be too small for the brake vacuum hose which uses a check valve and it looks to be too big to be the windshield washer hose from the reservoir in the boot which also has a check valve in it.

The US car may not have anything like it...

How about the hose to the MAP sensor #3 in second picture
It also attaches to the fitting #27 in the intake manifold

I don't know where the other end went because the other end is inside a bundle of cables which disappears through the bulkhead. The cable has a solid wall ie not rubber

That is a hose, not a cable...

Does your MAP sensor (on the RH side of the firewall) have a hose going to the intake manifold?

Does your Carbon Canister have a hose going to the EEC valve on your Left Side inner fender in the engine bay?

Ohh Ohh, I think I know this one. Is it the non return valve for the EECS purge line?

I actually have the opposite problem where I have about 6" of crumbling hose hanging off the port loose, and I've been looking for your end with the non return valve to reattach. Try tugging on this one and I bet it is loose.

The hose material is something different from a regular vacuum hose (and I'd like to know what so I can replace it).

You could be right. That would account for the non-return valve that is in the line.

Judging from the parts book illustration, it is a nylon line with fabric connector segments at both ends.

I can look at my engine(s) tomorrow to confirm that.

Are you sure you don't want to come to North Carolina so you can look at the different parts that make up the M100?

It does look very much like the non return valve in the purge line. Looks like the other end should go to the EECS purge port

TorqueHorse Thanks for the photo. When I got the car the engine reved to about 2000rpm on start up before settling back to 1000-1200rpm (it still does it) it was suggested that there was a hose off or split. I found a loose crumbling hose and could see nowhere to fix to ,so I took it off and blanked off the nipple at the back of the plenum. I now know what it is, thank you. As you say the hose is different to the usual hose material, but will it be alright to use a piece of silicon hose to connect the non return valve to the plenum ?

They used a plastic / nylon main pipe with short pieces of connector hoses to make sure the long hose never "got tired" and started collapsing and stopped doing it's job.

If the hose collapsed, it would block the vacuum leak but the emission component would not work and that was something the developers never wanted to happen because the emission certification might be revoked.

Just find the connection points and put it back into it's proper place.

See this post - it is the "Purge Line" in the diagram and goes to one of the vac hoses on the back of the plenum by the throttle body.
