I Have similar issue in my car when i very slowly reversed into someone who had a towbar in their car. I was lucky only the paint cracked when the fibre flexed.

if you google for fibreglass crack repair (boat) you will find how people repair them, its not necesarily expensive in terms of materials but the labour involved will bring up the costs rapidly if your paying someone else to do it.

either way, painting something in a car is always a rather pricey job

First, you need to be 100% sure of the material you're mending......

.... the OE bumpers are made of some form of flexible polymer (plastic!) - but I can't remember which one!!!

Some aftermarket replacements are made from HDPE (which may be the same as OE, but, have I already said, I can't remember).... whilst some are made from fibreglass.

'Minor' repairs to either will be similar, but more structural ones may well be different. The Workshop Manual states what additives should be put into the paint before spraying the bumpers to allow the correct 'flex'.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
