It took a while to find the one way valve. I was looking for something smaller rather than a three inch diameter plastic thing. The exit pipe seemed to enter the engine block mid point and the other up to the plenum spigot, so I guess it's a breather of some sort. The tickover is now around 1000 rpm and hopefully the mixture will be a tadge leaner.

The new wing mirrors arrived from Phoenix Wing Mirrors, today, 4 days after ordering. Industrial double-sided tape to attach to existing mirror. £20 each. Concave design to help reduce the blind spot. Excellent service

No! They’re not heated but were only £20 each.

Tomorrow, I’ve got to go for another controle technique ( mot) because for the registration process the CT needs to be no more than 6 months old. French bureaucracy moves slowly

ll mediterranean countries suffer the same fate.

you can adapt glass to be heated, but you need to do that before you glue it. theres generic unversal kits on ebay

stuff like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121598637704 ... R-bxvuWWZQ

i hae a kit at home.. been there nearly 10 years. waiting for me to actually bother to upgrade the glass on my celica mirrors.

The car passed its new controle technique so now I'm awaiting the RTI ?? ? report to progress the next stage of the registration process. This really is a voyage of discovery.

Well strike me pink, blow me down, who’d have thought it, well I never. The French registration has come through. Now I can think about repainting and changing bits on the suspension, changing the door seals and all the myriad other jobs that are on the list, but we’re officially legal.

I’ve been using the fed spec on occasion and generally she’s running well. However I’m concerned about the heaviness of the steering. There’s a fair bit on LEC about it but it does seem heavy. The tyre pressures are good. The fluid has been replaced. The universal looks OK. Maybe I’m comparing the elan unfairly with the modern Qashqai. Any ideas ?

More than likely Chriso, the Elan PS is fairly heavy in comparison to modern stuff so it's going to feel even heavier for a time if you're used to it being much
lighter, drive it for a few days without driving other motors and it'll start to feel normal, then when you go back to the modern car it'll then feel far too light.

yes, you are comparing it (not) unfairly

the steering is very heavy compared to other 90's cars with power steering (i can offer 5 examples from experience) and the SE is considerably heavier than the NA as well but even the NA is heavy compared to all my Toyotas

its just the way it works.

if you want to be 100% sure its working the test is very straight forward

stop the engine and try to make the steering move. then start the engine while you are putting pressure to make it move. you will notice the PAS does a fair amount of work for you.

Has anyone tried to upgrade the steering ?A stronger or more efficient pump would be the obvious thing.

not that im aware of. too much hassle to be honest.

after a while i actually prefer the way the M100 works. it gives me the feel i have more feedback from the road than i get from the other cars.

but if you decide to do it. i think all of us will be veru closely watching your progress because if your sucessfull i think a few of us would follow suit very quickly

i wonder if changing the pulley at the pump with something sligtly smaller will make it "work overtime" but would very quickly prove if extra pressure can make a difference. im just spitballing bad ideas at this point

I've just been reading an older thread referencing the same issue. Dave Pink was considering changing the oil driven system for an electrical one. The idea wasn't progressed. If he can't develop it with his knowledge, then I don't have much of a chance. Especially trying to source the parts in France. I'll change the uv joint and see if that improves the movement.

He's not given up on the idea, it's just the fact he hasn't come across a Na without pas to justify the effort

I thought I'd typed a reply yesterday - but then our internet dropped out, and when it came back I assumed it had posted......

..... anyway, basically, I wanted (or still want!) to try a Corsa steering column with electric assist - but it would need quite a lot of work to both fit it and get it to connect to the rack......

..... the current PAS rack may or may not be suitable, but would need to be 'sealed' in some way - and I'd prefer to use a non-PAS rack to start with. I have yet to find one to play with.

I'm sure that something from the Vauxhall stable can be modified (brackets?) to fit the Elan and connect up. The big problem is having a 'jig' to work on - which I simply don't have - ideally it needs a bodytub and chassis with the front suspension still present. Trying to fit it all to a complete running car isn't something I feel worth trying at this stage.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Jamie has access to a large scrapyard when he's looking for seals. That wouldn't get past the "tub" problem though
