What is the process for 'jacking up the engine' on one side when you have taken out the engine mount nearest to the timing belt cover ?
Piece of wood to spread the load on top of a jack ? Is there enough space to do this under the car ? Is that going to squash the sump in anyway ?

I usually use a scissor jack as it is easier to fine-tune the height without hydraulics (and it doesn't take much weight anyway) - and then a small bit of wood to help spread the load.
Position the jack longitudinally, with the operating handle towards the front of the car, and have it near to the drain plug.
The requirement for the 'fine tuning' only really comes into it if you are removing the 4 bolts holding the mounting to the engine, as it helps to get the weight off each of the 4 bolts so you can undo them by finger once they are cracked off.

Thank you - so if you are wishing to get the cover off just to have a look at the cam gears - do you need to remove the mount to the engine ?
(Sorry, haven't even gone outside to have a look at it yet !)

Do you take the engine mount bolt out or do you take the whole engine mount from the wing ?
Can't do anything with the cambelt cover bolt , if I jack it up too far parts of the engine are catching on the bodywork ??

I remove the single bolt through the bush, then the engine can be raised.... remove the 4 bolts from the engine if required, but probably unnecessary if you are just removing the top cover.
The only awkward bolt is the one in the middle - I have a "special tool" for that one which is a cut-down 10mm socket welded to a flat bar to turn it.... but a 1/4" drive socket should work if you can turn it.
I also find that the PAS pipe gets in the way, but by removing the nut at the pump end (3/4" head, NOT 19mm!) you can get it out of the way and the cover comes off easily.

I've (somehow) got all 5 bolts out of the cam belt cover !
Now have no idea how that is going to come out ?!
