The Black Beastie has always been very low for HC's and CO. Open loop too :smt023

All year the revcounter has been playing up (over-reading by 3k rpm). The day it goes in for its MoT it behaves perfectly.

Even more weirdly, the heated window switch, which had never worked since buying the car, also worked straight on the button. probably the first day of ownership when everything worked exactly as it is supposed to!

And it sailed through the MoT, with just an advisory on tyre tread on one tyre reaching its legal limit.
If you can read this, the Caterham is in the garage and the Elan is on the road.

I wondered that as well, but then assumed that the OP meant the heated mirrors.....

Yeah bit of brain fade! I meant heated mirrors.

Although mine does have a heated rear window when I get round to finishing the wiring :D

Yes, spent most of 2024 intermittently converting a Heritage MGF hardtop to fit my S2.

I’ll do a write up and post it here. On the surface it looks okay, underneath it’s a bit, how shall we say, sketchy :D

It’s ‘almost’ watertight, but every time I refit it I create a new small leak that I then fix. Next challenge is to make better, reliable seals near the B pillar.

Merlot came back home today after having 'B' and 'C' service + MOT

All good with a PASS and good readings of:

CO 0.77%
HC 69 ppm

Well, todays visit to the garage wasn't quite what I expected - but not in a bad way at all.

Ray has been my "MOT man" for the last 7 years, and we always have a fairly relaxed time, with no great surprises.

However, today he had his apprentice, Shan (it's a longer name, but spelt in Welsh, so she is known as Shan) waiting to do my car - as part of her college course she has to do a number of 'full' MOT type tests, with a written report, whilst Ray does the official testing/logging of the event.

The whole thing took nearly an hour and a half, as Shan needed to fill in a few forms with her observations of the vehicle, and the test parameters. Ray had already asked if I was okay with this, as it would take extra time, but as I had nowt else in the diary, I was happy to play along.

The car had the most thorough test/examination that it has ever been through, with a lot of things done which are not actually part of the relevant MOT test for that age of vehicle, but Ray knew that the car would be a good test example...... also, it gave Shan a chance to see how different things worked in the real world and not just in the books.

My only surprise was that the headlamp aim was perfectly within tolerance, as they have never been set up on a beam reader before, so i was half expecting to need to twiddle the screws a bit.

I spent about half an hour explaining the vagaries of the brake system as she had never encountered a car with adjustable bias valves, and didn't understand them. The chart on the wall didn't list the Elan, so brake efficiencies were calculated using formulae in the book, together with the weight as listed on the VIN plate. I explained that whilst the overall efficiency would be automatically calculated from the weight on the rollers, by adjusting the bias valves it was easy to make the car appear to have 66% efficiency, not the 50% required, but that would have far too much braking at the rear for road use. So she got to fiddle with the valves whilst I operated the brakes/rollers and she could see what effect it had on the readouts. At the end I set it up where I like it, with 64% on the front, and 36 on the rear - which gave an overall efficiency as 55%.

The handbrake gave a good 210Lbs, which is 19%, so I was happy with that - and no imbalance was found.

It's the only MOT test I've had where each tyre was checked for tread depth at 3 points in the circumference, and noted on the forms. (all over 6mm).

Oh, and the emissions were well low (as expected with a closed loop system).

So, it took a lot longer than usual, but I had time for 2 coffees instead of the usual 1 - and gave someone a good chance to actually learn things that they don't normally see in modern cars. I did have to explain where all the switches and things are, and was glad that the hazards didn't play up! (and she couldn't see the number plate lights as it is an LED strip under the boot lid).

I *think* it is a good thing that Ray selected me and my car for this extended test, because he believed it wouldn't fail!

So, 3 years since the last MOT was done, and under 400 miles on the odometer since then....... hopefully it will get a bit more use in the current year, at the expense of the blue one.

Ah, well, I did the oil change this afternoon (which takes far longer than it should because of the sump guard) - and tomorrow is destined to sort out the hood (new elastic straps) and the hood cover release, which is a bit temperamental...... and if I have time, I would like to change the cambelt, but that may wait until next week.

I didn't get the 'little' jobs done before because getting the MOT and sorting out the bathroom took precedence, and I'd allowed a day (Thursday) in case of any failure that I was unaware of - but now will spend it fettling to make Fridays drive a bit nicer if I don't have to worry about the hood cover flying up whilst driving!

..... but I will take any urgent calls that may help you in your endeavours.

Forgot to add mine of a month ago.
Checked all the lights, windscreen washers/fluid,etc, all that I could think of . Even found an upper ball joint with a bit of rubber hanging down from it . Changed the ball joint 2 days before the MOT - what a relief.

Forgot to check the horn - the f*ckin horn

Also twisted the brake hose when I had the caliper off

Anyway, took it home and twiddled with things and took it back the next day.......
