have you looked at blaukpunt (im probably spelling it wrong) units ? they have a few different retro looking ones last time i checked.

a retro looking radio is one of those many tasks that is in my todo list for when i retire.

I've done that for a normal household amplifier, it's not super complicated except for rotary switches. You can buy quite effective and cheap "mechless" units which are half depth single DIN and use a USB extender to hide the port somewhere else.

Rotary ones you either have to be lucky, and the resistance range is similar or if stepped that it works on the same pins. If not, you are going to have to use the unit from your donor device, which might or might not fit in the case. This is where it gets difficult.

For car use; soldering the button extensions from the donor to the original PCB will take a lot of patience and precision, once it works, I would recommend sealing it (the PCB surface) with a resin dip. This should help the joints breaking from vibrations.
