Hi Ron and others,

I'm interested in purchasing an MK III board as part of a closed-loop conversion, a few questions though...

1) Do you have a vague expected wait time for it to be ready? - I totally appreciate that they take time, so no rush, just interested.
2) Do you include a switch to switch between closed and open loop, or is it just a case of bridging the pins/installing a switch if needed? - Same for a switch from normal to mountain mode.
3) RE Kilimanjaro and Everest, can you select either one, or does the board come with a specific one?
4) Slightly off topic, but is it likely to be a bad idea to start fiddling with this sort of stuff while I still haven't driven the car properly? - Still doing work on it to get it through its MOT (including emissions, hence the CL). Not sure if not having a baseline 'normal' might be challenging.
5) Finally, would a chip adjustment automatically help emissions without doing anything else? Been reading a lot on the forums but its confusing me a little.

Thanks!

To answer your questions Noah:
1. I aim to have a board made, programmed and on it's way within a week, with possible short delays around things like holidays, family occasions and the like.
2. The MkIII board can be switched between Open loop and Closed loop by installing a jumper on the board. I include the wiring for a Standard / Mountain switch but not the switch itself, as there are as many different ideas about what it should look like and where to site it as there are owners!
3. The board comes with a specific version, so for an Everest version the 4 images would be:
Jumper out, switch off - Standard Open Loop
Jumper out, switch on - Everest Open Loop
Jumper in, switch off - Standard Closed Loop
Jumper in, switch on - Everest Closed Loop
4. If your O2 sensor and wiring are OK (and the alternator's putting out enough current to run the O2 sensor), there's not really much difference in setting up Open or Closed loop. In fact with Closed loop the CO pot is ignored so you don't have to fiddle with it.
If I were you I'd set the CAS and timing on the Standard Closed loop version, get it through the MOT, tweak until you're happy it's doing what it should, then switch in the Mountain image and see what it gives you.
5. The Mountain images don't improve emissions over the equivalent Lotus versions, BUT - Lotus did release an update to the Open Loop '9929' code to allow more adjustment range of the CO Pot. The '9930' code was meant for Open loop cars that had difficulty getting through an MOT.
The Closed loop '1499' prom doesn't have the same problem, just make sure the car's being tested to the right standard - Pre August 1992 for an SE (before Catalysts had to be fitted in the UK).

Brilliant, thank you for the information Ron! - In that case, could I please have an Everest chip? - Elanscan says I have a Prom ID 9239.

Let me know what other information you need and how best to contact you!

Separately, what do you mean by CAS? I will ask the garage that MOT'd the car if I can set the POT using their emissions tester. I will do the timing separately.

Cheers.

Noah,
I'll PM you with more info & details.

CAS: In the M100's distributor-less ignition system the Cam Angle Sensor (CAS) sits on the end of the exhaust cam and sends signals to the ECU as the cam rotates. The ECU then decides when to fire the coils and how much fuel to inject. The timing's set by putting the ECU into service mode and rotating the CAS until the engine fires at 16 degrees BTDC.

BTW You don't need to set the CO Pot if you're Closed Loop, S2s don't even have one fitted.

Sounds good, thanks Ron.

Ah, yes knew I'd seen CAS somewhere. That all makes sense, thanks for the info.

its important to note that !!!

in other words. the NA cars dont have it because they use have a distributor. i know this is not likelt to affect you statistically, but its important to note in the event of someone else who has an NA reading that in isolation.

Thanks for pointing that out Joao,

I was in 'Turbo mode' and not even thinking of the NA.
In my defence the boards wouldn't work in a NA ECU!

Hi Ron
ive read this thread with interest, its great that there are experts in the forus keeping the M100 alive.
I am keen to upgrade my ECU as i too have the dreaded high CO MOT fail issue.
I have a 1990 turbo running open loop with 9929 cal.
I have removed the CO pot and its adjusted fully to 270 ohms so no more adjustment to lean.
Do you still have any 9930 open loop chips available to purchase?
Is there any other mods i would need?
Thanks in advance Dave

HI Ron, A quick question, do you have any more boards available?
I am running the 9229 chip and MOT failed at 6.5%
CO. adjustment pot is fully lean 0.65 ohms - I have removed the pot and checked resistance and across the range and there is no more movement lower than 0.65 ohms
I suspect a new calibration 9230 (I think) will help with this issue.
I would like to keep open loop if possible and I'm not looking for more power (just a chance at an MOT pass)
If you have stock available or planned future stock please could you advise (or add me to the bottom of the queue please)
thanks
Dave

Dtjonesy there is another method of reducing your worries about emissions at MoT time: Uprating your 9229 prom to a 1499 prom, that RonR can also supply.

You'll need to add an O2 sensor (and, perhaps, some extra wiring) but your fuelling won't be dependant upon a finely-tuned rheostat (from a time when richer meant faster...) but rather it will be controlled and maintained at an air:fuel ratio of 14.7:1. I can understand your reluctance to shy away from "looking for more power" and keeping stock - but the 1499 prom won't add anything other than the perfect/correct mixture. I personally feel the same, but having upgraded my own 9239 I can assure you that MoT time for me is a 'thing of beauty...' - well, not really :? - but I have absolutely none of those 'phew, glad it's passed this time' thoughts, now.

Of course there's also Ron's 1499 Everest chip that will add more power but you don't have to take advantage of that. My 36-year-old only goes near a track once a year, and then she looks on from afar clutching her 'kerchief and smelling salts :)

Hi Ron.. I’m currently looking for an Everest chip for a Lotus Elan M100 (SE Turbo).
I want to make sure I get the correct version for my stock ECU.
Could you please confirm availability and compatibility?
Also, could you give me some basic instructions:
Is it plug & play or does it require any modifications?
Do I need to change anything else when installing it (boost control solenoid, etc.)?
I may have a couple of additional questions before purchasing — what’s the best way to contact you directly?
Thanks in advance!

Ron - not related directly at the boards/chip you currently make but - I've got one of the original chips that was produced but never got round to fitting it.
Sounds like the chips/boards you supply now can be switchable between programs - don't think the originals were but I might be wrong ?
Can my original chip be switchable (if it isn't already) ? Or is it a case of its 'on' all the time in higher boost mode ?

Hi Simon,

As far as I know Alan's 'Standard' boards never had the option to switch between 2 prom images, only half the available memory on the chip was used.
However with Alan's 'Switcher' boards, you could select 1 of 16 Prom Images.

When I was developing my boards I modified one of Alan's standard 'Moates' boards into a 2-way switcher, so although with a bit of jiggery-pokery and soldering it's possible, you'd have to have an Eprom burner to program your chip with the second prom image.

I do have some of my early 2-way switcher boards left which take the same chip as Alan used. The chips went obsolete and I've run out of them now, but could re-program an existing chip with new prom images to use in one of my boards.

Morning all, quick update on my CO issues (6.5% MOT Failure)
RonR provided an 9930 updated eprom (with a 1499 code if required for future closed loop)
Fitted in minutes, great instructions provided by Ron.
CO adjusted using gunson CO analyser, suddenly no unburnt fuel smells and an MOT result well below the limit
Now to sort out the marginal handbrake fail....
Thanks RonR great service
